• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Help with Volume Shadow

Hi to all, I have made a building that has self shadows that I dont want it, I edit the material with GMax deactivating the "Volume Shadow" and it works (FSX SP2), but the MDL have to be exported again with the Model Converter X (to prevent to dissapearr, see post), when I do that, the building show self-shadow again, I look in the material with the same Model Converter and is already deactivated (Volume Shadow = FALSE), anyone know how to eliminate the self shadow with the Model Converter?

Thanks guys

MCX loads the material from the model. It certainly shouldn't put any volume shadow in. Make sure you're updating your library in the sim.

Hi, thanks for the replay.

What do you mean with "updating your library in the sim" please?

When I export the MDL from GMax with no volume shadow (or any shadow of any kind), the building looks like I want to, but dissapear, if I activate again the Volume Shadow (gmax) appears the self-shadow (Im not sure now if its a self shadow or else), I dont understand why the shadows come back when is exported from the gmax MDL to MDX "FSX MDL Object" with no shadows. Please see the pictures, maybe Im wrong and these are no shadows at all and are something else. Thanks

Gmax MDL, with no volume shadow and no MDX convertion (but dissapear)

I'm a bit confused. Delete the material and make a new one, apply it (it will map straight away). Don't tick volume shadow. Export the .mdl as a new file, don't overwrite the old one.

if the model disappears at a certain angle it's probably a bounding box problem. make the model bigger by placing a small object somewhere away from it.

Thanks Shaun! Solved! It wasn't the materials (I deleted and make new ones, and did all that you say), but was 'the small object added to the big terminal gmax building to make the model bigger' that solves all the problems! no need to re-export/re-convert the Gmax MDL with the MCX to avoid the dissapearing, just like always, I export the MDL from GMax, create the BGL with the Library Creator, same GUID, same MDL name (no overwriting the old one, as you say) and voilà!! no self shadows, no dissapearing!

Thanks you so much!
