• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

Overlaying photoscenery with different resolutions

Hi,

how do I overlay a photoscenery with different resolutions?

I created a 1m/px photoscenery for an area of 620 km². Now I'd like to add a 0.4m/px photoreal for the airport area. What is the best way to do this?

One more small thing: Is there a tool to convert a cvx bgl file to an ESRI shapefile?

This works simply enough, just alpha-sort them for priority -- I normally use 'a_' as a prefix for high resolution airports. However you can still get drastic LOD switching, so you need to make sure that the same airport image is used in the 1m/px image.

Yes, I see the drastic change with different resolutions when the tiles are loaded. Do you think that the difference between 1m/px and 0.4m/px is too big? Maybe I try to make the island in 0.6m/px.

A lot of my scenery includes large areas at 1m/px and airports up to 7cm/px, so the difference in resolutions shouldn't be a problem. The secret is to make sure that the images are the same. So if you start with two completely different images, you'd colour-correct the high resolution image first, then plop it onto the lower res image, to colour-match that as best you can. Then leave the high res image overlaid, and tidy up he edges so that it blends well.
How you do this will depend on how you created the high res image. I normally have a very slight blend around the edges to match roads etc, so that you don't notice any colour change in the middle of paddocks. I use Global Mapper, but I guess you could do this any other way, including manually by eye in your graphics editor. I load the low-res image into Global Mapper, then take note of the resolution, then drop the high res image on top. Then I export the whole thing at the lower resolution that I took note of. Then I erase enough of the top image until the airport boundary blends invisibly.
Doing it this way means that although there will still be LOD jumps, you won't notice because the image colour/tonal range won't change, just the resolution, so you will see a sudden sharpening.
 
Hi guys,

if you're using different sources for the two photoreal files then an alternative approach is to use the blendmask of the low-resolution imagery to "cut out" (= pure black) the area covered by the high-resolution imagery, with a feathered overlap zone a few pixels wide. That way the only imagery available to the sim in that area is the high-res source, including its own lower LODs at larger viewing distances.

Obviously, you still need to color-match the two sources and it also makes sense to choose the boundaries of your high-res source to follow features that best "mask" the transition area, as suggested by toprob.
