• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

I am using sbuilder 2.05. I want to append the VTPP file to the stock EGHA airfield. I've read this:" AB9XXYY0.BGL - these files refer to Airport base polygons - You can explore the default characteristics of VTP scenery by opening (appending) the files and examining the Properties of the Lines and Polygons." How do I find EGHA?

I have my EGHA_ADE9_TW_ADE.BGL showing in FS9. I want to make the grass much bigger. I have made a Compton_Abbas.VTPP.BGL & put it in the same folder but it doesn't show.
As I've used the stock EGHA (see above) I assume I must append the stock VTPP file?
Thanks.

Hi Terry:

If you wish to "Append" your custom VTP BGL file and examine it in SBuilder for FS9 along with the FS9 default vector LWM BGL files for that airfield area, you may find them in:

[FS9 install path]\Scenery\Eurw\Scenery\

Files pertinent to that airfield area would have names such as ??947130.BGL and ??947140.BGL.

[EDITED]

FYI: AFAIK, aside from the FS9 default EGHA 'Airport Background' Polygon:

[FS9 install path]\Scenery\Eurw\Scenery\AB947130.bgl

...there is no FS default VTP BGL made specifically for Compton Abbas Airfield (IATA: n/a, ICAO: EGHA) so, if you wish to examine that airfield area from FS2004 (aka "FS9") in SBuilder for FS9 as an "Appended" file, there will not be any other default "VTP" file found for ex: a local land class textured polygon aside from the 'class mapped' Airport Background polygon referenced above.

NOTE: The above FS9 default EGHA 'Airport Background' Polygon:

[FS9 install path]\Scenery\Eurw\Scenery\AB947130.bgl

...can be Appended to your VTP grass polygon project in SBuilder as alluded to in SBuilder's Help file:

(see: SBuilder Menu > Help > Search Tab > Search String: "VTP" > click 'List Topics' > Append - VTP BGL)

FYI: You can view most (but not all) default FS9 terrain scenery BGL files for the EGHA airport area in:

[FS9 SDK install path]\TERRAIN_SDK\Terrain_Tools\tmfviewer.exe

You may also find it more informative to examine that airfield area in Jim Keir's LWMViewer2:

[EDITED]

BTW: In order to achieve successful display of a appropriately created FS9 format LWM VTP (Vector Textured Polygon) BGL file, you must be sure that the both the internal VTP "Layer Number" of the BGL, and its position in the FS Scenery Library stack of display priority layers ...allows your custom polygon (mapped to a FS default land class texture) to appear on top of underlying default or other 3rd party scenery layers.

Hope this info helps you sort out the scenario at your airfield of interest. :)

Hello GaryGB,

Your info is rather more involved than I expected so I'll explain what I've done so far.

I started a new Compton Abbas with sbuilder & got my VTPP.bgl.
With ADE9 I started a new project Compton Abbas with CA for the indent. This ADE9 airfield appeared on top of the stock EGHA. I decided to start again.

I next used EGHA the stock airfield with ADE9 & compiled my bgl. I added the sbuilder Compton_Abbas_VTPP.bgl in the scenery folder & added it to FS9. It appears as my screenshot shows but not the VTPP grass I made with sbuilder. If the VTPP would appear my concern would end as I could run the road along the south side as it does in real life.
Terry.

Hi Terry:

2 initial important questions before I compose another reply:

1.) Where did you place your custom ADE9 airport and VTP BGL files (ex):

* [FS9 install path]\Addon Scenery\Scenery

...Or:

* [FS9 install path]\Addon Scenery\[your custom project folder name]\Scenery

If the latter physical folder location was used, you would of course need to manually "Add Area" in the FS9 Scenery Library GUI, then confirm that the entry is located at the top of the FS9 Scenery Library GUI stack of priority layers before then restarting FS9.

If this has been done, and you still do not see your VTP BGL displayed in FS9 at run time, we must ask:

2.) What internal VTP BGL scenery content layer number was assigned to the VTP polygon ?

(see: SBuilder Menu > Help > Search Tab > Search String: "VTP" > click 'List Topics' > VTP Scenery)

If you are uncertain as to this aspect of how the VTP polygon was created, you may wish to attach it to this thread within a ZIP file, so it can be examined as to its internal layer number (and other internal code attributes) in an effort to see why it may not be getting displayed on top of other scenery layers in FS9 at run time.

NOTE: The internal layer number of a VTP BGL is a separate binary attribute (stored inside the BGL) and is distinct from the priority number associated with a BGLs physical position within the FS9 Scenery Library GUI stack of layers. ;)

Hi GaryGB,

I have just noticed that the VTPP file was named Compton_Abbas._VTPP.BGL & checking all the other VTPP files I've made, noticed none had . after any name. SO, I renamed the file & removed the . of the one in the scenery folder & bingo - the grass I want appeared........:)

My apologies for all the hassle I've created, but in the end it was a simple full-stop at fault! I'm grateful for your input nonetheless.......

Hi Terry:

<...I've been there, and done that ...a few times myself ! > :D

Glad you got things sorted out with the file naming etc. :)

PS: The Windows NT OS platform file system (aka Windows-XP / Vista / Win-7) allows multiple "." file name / file extension delimiters in a 250 character max length "long file name" (which includes its 'path')

Use of more than 1 file extension (or more than 3 characters in a file extension) as a Windows NT 'long file naming option' can prove confusing to some file operations with applications / utilities etc., so one might wish to use larger type faces / fonts in Windows to make dialog boxes a bit larger ...to help with proof-reading ones typing.

Hope the "Tutorial(s)" above prove helpful in the future with your "FS9 WW-II UK Airfields" project !

Thanks. You'd have thought after 30 odd WW2 airfields I'd have noticed my mistake!
