Hi,
I'd like to present how to make 3d grass in FSX with Gmax and MCX.  It is not difficult and you can get a very good frame rate with detail grass.  It is not like the way you making individual tree.  It is stack of planes in vertical with alpha channel that make you have illusion of connecting column of color that resemble to the grass.
