• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

On SceneryDesign.org we had a Wiki for the tutorials (which is still active of course). Before that we had a special forum for the tutorials. Both systems have their advantages and disadvantages. The Wiki for example has not yet generated the interaction from users that we had hoped for, while the forum had the trouble of not being that easy to find tutorials.

So now that we have this new developer community, let's have a discussion about how to store tutorials, as I am sure we will get tutorials from the other sections as well. So if you have ideas about this, please let us know or vote on the poll. After that we will try to move all current tutorials to the found solution.

I meant a Wiki thats also produces a .PDF as per the link

Personally I am a big fan of the Wiki system. I think with the recent move to get a more diverse set of developers to this site it is the way forward.

What I don't like about the WIKI is it's "not so easy to jump into" approach. I would prefer a version with a better and easier interface :)

Looking at the results until now the Wiki seems quite popular, although being able get have a PDF version also seems to be popular. So I guess the mixture of both might be the way to go.

Maybe we need to look for different Wiki software that is a bit easier to use.

Could one you guys and gals

I think the one Wikipedia uses is not to bad.

It would need trimming down a bit.

Could one you guys and gals who are far
more literate than me put something in
Wikipedia about FS scenery design ???
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php...&search=fs2004+scenery+design&fulltext=Search

Off Subject.
I have given up on Google and going to Wikipedia for research.
Yesterday I was trying to find up to date figures on how much time a
certain group of planes spend taxing on average in the US.
Google was hopeless , but Wikipedia pointed me in the right direction almost straight up.

I generally like the WIKI approach, but would like it changed to be comprehensive in appearance. I know that a lot of time has been put into getting FSdeveloper.com going, with the WIKI put on the back-burner, but if you guys could get it "up to speed" as an FSDeveloper.com WIKI, not just structured for scenery, then that would be the ticket!

Best,

Owen

Well, thats the thing...

You can structure it, we all can. But, if we are to stick with it, then it needs to be easier alright.

It seems to me that most people know the Wikipedia system....?

I think we can use the Wikipedia software here as well, I will look into that. The current software is indeed not as easy to use as we should like. I'll come back to this soon.

Once we have the software configured as we which, we can make the Wiki a true FsDeveloper Wiki, instead of only a scenery Wiki.

It's called MediaWiki, and it's entirely too easy to use. I've put up a few before, and it's great. Real simple configuration.

We are working on the initial layout now.

But... right now, real life gets in the way... off out to a client, back later :)

What I would like to see;

Use a standard template and give examples how to fill in the template. Then have us submit our tutorials for review. Once you accept them you .pdf the article and post on your knowledge base.

This way you get credit for the tutorials and the authors get credit for their knowledge. I can download the entire thing and read it when I am pondering life on the thrown. :D

THere will always be tutorials that are "too big" for a simple online posting, although with the Wiki format this "limit" can be pretty big.

However, I like the general idea of the Wiki format, with the downloadable pdf.

If it's a large tutorial, including sample files, etc., maybe a reasonable summary/abstract with a downloadable pdf/ zip....

Either way, the basic Wiki system - as presented here - is excellent for the presentation of tutorials!!

The downloadable PDF files from the Wiki are certainly something we will be looking at in the future, as a long of people seem to prefer to have a downloaded version as well (for offline reading probably).

If a tutorial includes a lot of samples files or other stuff, it would always be possible to add that as an attachment. If that is wanted contact either Nick or me, so that we can upload the files for you.

Arno - While I see that the "Wiki" and "downloadable" pdf are running neck and neck, I think that, in the end, the practical result will be that the tutorials should be Wiki - and if there are enough sample files/etc., coordinate the tutorial with you (where "you" stands for the appropriate FSdeveloper.com admin).

In many cases, if I want *my* downloadable copy of the Wiki tutorial, a quick "copy and paste" into my own editor will do the job.

If there are supplemental files, the tutorial author will have coordinated with you anyway to provide the files.

Not sure if this belongs on the end of here or not, so excuse me if I've misjudged.

Would it be possible to have a section somewhere that we can upload files to, and post code?

Things like classes and other snippets we think other developers might find useful?

Could even just be a section of the forum if file uploads of .dll's and other coding extensions were allowed? I'm sure we all have some bits of code we don't mind sharing and I'm positive that many people could benefit from it.

Would it be possible to have a concise, step-by-step on just HOW to create a new Wiki page?

I've just spent two hours chasing my tail there and find there's no instructions on how to CREATE a new page!

Perhaps that is why so few folks are using it...

EDIT:

I finally figured out that you have to do a "Search" first for the title you want, then you can Create a new page when the Search comes up empty!

Talk about non-intuitive!!!
