• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

    Bridge cables

Hi Jon, Good point. I hadn't noticed the jaggies. Perhaps I had my display set for anti-aliasing at the time (which takes more computing horsepower than some users are willing to spare). For my models, I have been using 3d railings for the virtual cockpit (where detail is most important)...

    Bridge cables

In experimenting with lines and shapes (such as railings), I have found that transparent textures can do a better job - both up close and far away. Is this true in all cases, or are there limitations? For example, if the ratio of empty space to lines is too high, does it take up too much...

    gmax taxilines ?

Perhaps this is not helpful, but could you make the line narrower and simply color it yellow? I know that I could center the texture using FSDS. However, even so, one problem is that the lines would blur horribly, especially from ground level. I had that problem with an aircraft carrier deck...

    Modifying/Replacing Mesh

I tried out some programs that convert dem to dxf, thinking that I could import the dxf into gmax and modify it. However, I am using a 10 meter dem, and the number of points was apparently too large, even when I reduced the area to a couple of miles square. Nevertheless, I believe that the...

    Modifying/Replacing Mesh

Thanks. That's what I thought. I have used Microdem to make manual changes to the mesh and I have heard that you can use BlackArt to make some changes. I'm surprised that no one has come up with a tool that will import the mesh into a 3d editor like gmax and export it as mesh. Phil

    Gmax Textures

Shouldn't it be: addon scenery + McGregor's + scenery - for the scenery bgl's + texture - for the texture? In other words, the texture directory should be a subdirectory of McGregor's, not of McGregor's/scenery. As far as I know, FS2004 does not read any subdirectories of...

    Modifying/Replacing Mesh

Arno, I am trying to preserve some of the character of the underlying terrain and to avoid the "flat as a pool table" effect. Ideally, there would be some kind of program where I could take existing mesh and apply a polynomial regression formula to smooth out the data. I could either modify...

    Modifying/Replacing Mesh

I am trying to smooth out an area of scenery that is already relatively flat, but is sloping. I am exploring several alternatives: 1. Smooth the mesh - Is there any tool that will do this? 2. Replace with Poly3(?) mesh - Is there a tool to easily create Poly3 mesh, or is this a hand-drawn...

Platforms - Why Do Some Not Work

I "recut" the airport files and it seems to have eliminated the problem. I had previously cut the airport file into 3 different files because makemdl would not handle the hundreds of platforms. I had one file for runways, one for taxiways and one for 3d structures. This evening I moved some...

Platforms - Why Do Some Not Work

You need to use multiple platforms if you are going to make the runways like real world runways, which have dips and humps and if you are going to sit on top of the runway. It is not something I would generally recommend. It was very time-consuming and has several disadvantages. But in my...

Platforms - Why Do Some Not Work

Each runway is a single object with many polygons. Because (unlike an aircraft carrier) the runway is not level, I had to clone each polygon in each runway and make a platform out of that. Works fine, until I get to the corners of the whole gmax model, i.e. the first and last 3 polygons of the...

Platforms - Why Do Some Not Work

I was building a runway on an island and realized that the terrain had a significant slope. I was able to get some high resolution mesh, so I decided to see if I could create a runway as a FSDS model. Since the aircraft "falls through" the FSDS runway, I had to conform the runway to the...

Platforms - Why Do Some Not Work

Now that I think about it, the problem seems to occur on the corners of the scenery. For example, one of the models includes 4 east/west runways. The problem is greatest at the beginning and the end of the north and south runways. That corresponds to the corners of the model. I will try...

    Lines

Rhysa, I grew pretty disenchanted with lines in FSDS. The big problem is that they don't grow fainter with distance. So, on a multi-resolution model, I used lines only on the highest resolution model, but quickly switched to a polygon. Also, you have to set the right colors for the lines, or...

Creating a Poly from Existing Points

Lou, Thanks! Works like a snap! It would have taken me days to figure that out. Phil
