• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

3DS Max

I would disagree.

I should qualify that:

No advanced FSX material properties (there are lots)
As an extension, no control over material groupings between models (batch optimisation)
Limited control over end-vertices / triangulation
No Support for animations

It is great that sketchup can be used for FS object creation, but it is nowhere near a purpose built tool.

What program was it that the gentleman from British Classics was modifying to FSX exports? He had it perfectly tuned last time I had seen one of his posts. It has bump mapping, specular, everything.... It was either Sketchup or Blender 'if' I remember correctly. He had done alot of serious work on getting it functioning...

Blender, and it still has the major flaw of being unable to access modeldef.xml or make_mdl.xml and create an .xanim file...

...which makes it pretty worthless for anything other than scenery, AFAIC.

Hmmm ... so is Blender a better option than Gmax. I can't imagine it is.

I'd sooner use FSDS, following my limited experience with Blender!

Over the years I have had at least a few hours spent in various 3D modeling programs such as Blender, CINEMA 4D, Maya, 3ds Max and LightWave (plus many other less professional 3D programs). Blender stands out in having (by far) the least user friendly interface.

If I didn't already own 3ds Max then I would definitely be using Gmax for FSX 3D modeling; it has the same price as Blender (free), supports virtually all that is required for FSX modeling (which Blender doesn't), and the interface is vastly superior to Blender's horrid excuse of an interface.

Thats it!

Thanks Dave.

I agree on Blender. I have installed it twice in my life (maybe more) and every time, I go into reading how it works, checking things out, and I close it out again each time never to come back. With Gmax, Lightwave, and Rhino, you have a far better interface. You can almost go in and figure things out by just looking at the menu's.
