• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Add platform to ground polygon.

I believe I have exhausted the search for something that should be pretty simple, yet eludes me.

What is the procedure for adding a platform to a ground poly in MCX?
I've tried adding the platform to one material as well as to the entire model. I've tried adding the platform to the model before converting to a ground poly, as well as during the ground poly wizard setup. I've even tried adding the platform to the resulting BGL (no poly or platform showed up after re-exporting it that time).

Opening the BGL in MCX shows no attached platform after the ground poly wizard is run.

What might I be missing?

Thanks in advance.

I hardened mine by putting an afcad (ADE) apron under it with a taxiway path across it. I don't think there's any other way unless you export it as an FSX model with a platform attached and skip the GP wizard entirely. It'll flicker though unless you set it up off the ground considerably.

Hi,

Ground polygons can't have platforms. And since they are on the ground they also don't need them in general, the ground is solid already.

To make the ground smooth you better put an xml apron or taxiway below.

Thank you for that piece of info guys.

I was having some issues with the XML runway showing underneath my polys at the edges, as well as the runway itself removing autogen in the approach path, so I had to go with the "thin" runway method and find another way to harden my surfaces.

I managed to add a platform via a separate invisible object in the shape of my runway, 0.1m above the ground. Works great.
However I now have the problem of the water spray effect not showing up when travelling over the platform while it is raining. Effects such as the touchdown smoke show up, but not others.

On a (slightly) separate note: I also cannot seem to get precipitation reflection on the platform nor on the ground poly. Isnt the water reflection enabled by simply specifying "Take into Account" in the material settings in MCX and enabling use of the global environment map?

Any ideas?

Hi,

Those precipitation reflection, just as bump maps and detail maps are FSX only features. The ground polygons use FS2002 style code and can't have these advanced material settings.

If you want them, you need to use FSX MDL files for your ground polygons. But that gives loads of issues with getting rid of flickering. There are quite some threads about this topic already.

Given the performance penalty of using platforms, I would not use platforms for my ground polygons. Either put some XML apron or taxiway below. Or else there is a SCASM SurfaceType command that can be used to make things smooth.
