• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Another transparency issue

Hi Arno,

This must be something I'm doing, but I can't figure it out. Using Sketchup, I've made a railing for new model in the idential fashion to what I've done before. The transparent sections look fine in sketchup. When I import the model into MCX (latest build) those sections are white. I tried one of my older railings as a test, and no problem. So I re-did the railing a number of times (tiff file, duplicate layer, no background, use 'clear', save as png, with prior flattening or without, none of which worked.

I then checked the material editor in MCX: the older 'good' railing imports with the alpha set to 'greater' and the z test alpha set to 'true'. My 'bad' railing imports as alpha = negative and z test alpha false -- and I see white where it should be transparent. If I change these settings in the Material Editor to those of the 'good railing' MCX displays the railing correctly. But when I then exported from MCX, the settings reverted to 'never' and 'false' when I re-imported the model to confirm that it was proper -- which it was not. And in FSX, the surface is black.

This *has to be* something I'm forgetting when I make my .png,....

Any suggestions?

[Edited to add:]

Sorry for not doing my homework first Arno. After much fiddling I found that I could use the material editor and click 'Set Default Transparent' and problem solved. But I have no idea of why I needed to do it for this texture image and not my others that have transparency! :-)

Thanks once again,

Larry

Hi Larry,

Can you send me the texture that does not work? I would like to see why ModelConverterX does not detect it as a texture with an alpha channel.

Hi Larry,

I fixed a bug, now both textures are recognised as being transparent correctly. So in the next development release it will work.

Thanks Arno! That saved a lot of self doubt. :-) Especially because I'm learning about the power of using higher resolution textures that have transparent areas.
