• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Another way to exclude ?

On a continuing quest for the best way to exclude autogen from within the airport, or within certain parts of the airport, I was thinking about creating a custom terrain tile using the autogen annotation tool, and letting my airport sit on this tile. Before I went to the trouble to try it, I thought I would check and see if anyone else has experimented with it. Although there shouldn't be any problem deleting the autogen right where the taxiways are, I don't know if I can control the rotation of the tile. But I suppose once it's placed, it should always stay in the same orientation. Anyone else messed with this?
My FSSC excludes always seem to wipe out either too much autogen, or none at all.

Another subject:

Can someone please post an example for the XML code to create a "default" terminal like FS2004 uses at so many of the smaller airports? I have followed the SDK to the letter, but just can't get it to compile.

Thanks

Hi,

I think the best way to remove autogen around an airfield is to place a VTP grass polygon below the airfield. This is also how MS does it in the default scenery. If you use the grass type MS also used (1183 for example) it will remove the autogen in the area.

I think that is a lot easier then having to place CUSTOM polygons with new AGN files.

About the MS terminals. It seems MS has made these out of smaller elements that are all contained in the OB*.BGL files. So in theory it are all custom 3D objects made for the specific airport. No really a command that gives that shape.

Thanks, Arno. I'll give that a try. Regarding the terminal....how do I place it, if there is not an XML code?

Yes, you would place the terminal with XML code, just like you place objects you made with GMax myself.

But the point I was trying to make is that each terminal in the default scenery is custom made for that airport. So it is very unlikely that one of those objects would fit your airport as well.

Arno, could you explain the process briefly on how to create and place VTP grass polygon's below the airfield? Remembering that I just two weeks ago picked up gMax for the first time as my intro into FS9 scenery design.

VTP polygons are part of the mesh scenery. They can thus not be placed with GMax. You will have to use a different tool for them.

Often used programs for mesh scenery elements are Ground2k4 or SBuilder. After setting up your project in these programs, you can just draw the polygon on screen on the location you want to have it.

Terminal buildings

With Arno's guidance, I was able to extract all of the objects from the South America OB file. Once I had the BGL decompiled to an XML file, it was fairly easy to locate the Guatamala City terminal, and relocate it to my home airport. They are placed just like any other object. So I would imagine it would be fairly easy to assemble all of the custom terminal buildings into a library where they could be placed with Rwy12 or ObjectPlacer.

Regarding the excludes, for now I have found that the easiest way is to use relatively small excludes with ExcBuilder, unless you want to, as suggested, put a polygon around the airport. Using ExcBuilder it was possible for me to leave some of the autogen scenery within the perimeter of the airport, but keep it off of the taxiways and aprons.

Thanks for the help!
