• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Attach Points (Effects vs Lights)?

I'm hoping someone might be able to help me figure this out for a freeware/public domain project, as my google searches are not turning up the infomation I need to solve the problem.

I'm trying to attach the fx_navgre.fx or fx_navred.fx to some small boats in the vehicles_water.bgl file.

In ModelConverterX I tried putting in the atchpt_effect_00 and calling up the fx_navgre.fx file with night/dawn/dusk switches on (also tried just "0" as a switch) and also have located the fx attach point in the x,y,z axis', however when I go into the sim, I'm not seeing the effects showing up.

(I backed up the original BGL and exported the tweaked models to a new file with the same GUID's).

When I had the dusk, night, dawn flags on the boats (i had as stationary boats in my scenery file) the boats disappeared at dusk. When I just had a straight flag of "0" (as per other attached fx in other boats), I don't see the effects showing up at all (however the MDL boat is still showing up).

Does anyone have any idea what I could possibly be doing wrong? And should I be trying to attach a light instead of an effect? I need to place these as attachments to the MDL as the lights need to be in specific spots.

Any help would be appreciated, it's something I've wanted to do since FSX was released and I want to give it into the public domain, as why should all the planes have nav lights and not the boats?

(Note: I just realized maybe my attach point needs to be the same as the effect name? but maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree)
(Note 2: I just realized boat traffic is different to static boats, re-testing)

Thanks in advance,
Dean.

Okay in answer to my own question, user error. I was adding the lights to static objects in the vehicles_water.bgl rather than the simobjects MDL. Tested now and all working fine... Will go push the limits in the sim once I place all the lights :)
