• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Attached object problem

Hi Arno,

I'm having a minor problem with an object attached to one of my AI boats. I thought I would see if I could get my AI tugboat to tow a logboom! :) It will and it looks very cool when it works… Using MCX, I attached the logboom (about 60 by 20 meters in size) 100 meters behind the datum. When FSX first resolves the scene, the tug is right on top of the logboom. If I change the point of view for a while and then look back the logboom appears in the correct place, but sometimes intermittently. It's large, but the file size is small. Any ideas? (The entire top surface of the logboom is a single texture. Would it help to divide it up?)

By the way, I had the same issue with the development release as of Wednesday; no textures, just white. ATI 6850 card. Sorry I didn't get the error messages for you. It was the tugboat that got in the way… :-)

Thanks as always!

Larry

Hi Larry,

Do you have a picture if the issue? From your description it sounds like the attachpoint is changing, but that would be weird.

Hi Arno,

Here's a link to two screenshots to illustrate:

I need to change the wake effect too. Either that or the tugboat skipper is in a very big hurry!

In testing this again I found that as soon as the camera got within about 100 meters of the tug, the barge immediately snapped back into the proper position... if this helps. :-)

Hi Larry,

Weird. Does your tug have levels of detail?

Hi Larry,

Weird. Does your tug have levels of detail?

No. No levels of detail. The total file size for the tug model is about 7 mb. The log boom is only about 100 kb. Could it be related to the overall complexity of the model, even though it's not one of my more complex ones? (None of those tow things however.)

Hi Larry,

I was thinking the attached object was only in the highest LOD maybe, but that can't be in this case. Quite weird that the object would suddenly move. Only other thing I can think about is that it is outside the bounding box and therefore behaving weird. Maybe it would be an idea to try to increase the bounding box a bit.

Thanks Arno,

Maybe I can try simply placing a small object 100 meters or so astern of the model in sketchup and seeing what happens. That will extend the bounding box. Or make it a towline since I'm at it. :-)

Sounds like a good idea. Or you could tweak the mdl, but that is harder.

Hi Arno,

I added a tiny triangle near the attachment point in the tug model. The FSX result was that the camera still had to get close (~100 meters) before the barge would suddenly jump to it's proper position, but now however, once it did that, it stayed that way, remained visible after the camera looked away for a while and then returned to the scene. Still not quite right, but this opens up some new possibilities. Like a tug towing a barge, or even a large vessel. :)
