• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Hi there!

I got this tip yesterday from a friend of mine - Autodesk AliasStudio is avaliable as a Personal Learning Edition. That is basically a free version limited to non-commercial use. Having only downloaded it, and not yet installed it, I can not say what the use for us might be, but all such tools are worth taking a look at. Check it out here!

I´ll report some when I can find the time to install and test the software.

I wouldn't get my hopes up - usually a PLE helps you learn the program, but you can't export/save to other than a proprietary format, useable only in the PLE.

And getting it to work with XtoMDL or MakeMDL will probably not be so easy either. So personally I would stick to the tool that are supported by the SDK.

Having actually taken the time to read the skimpy FAQs for the produce, the LE version saves in a proprietary format. It's totally useless for any design work, period.

Hi!

Bill, thanks for that very short, but clear answer. Saves a little time. :)

It's no fun if you actually READ the stuff.... then you know what you're talking about!

<grumble>

And, still not having had the time to even install the software, Gmax is basically the same thing. It saves in its own .gmax format. To see things from the bright side, given a proper exporter (supported??) it would be useful. No? (I´m not trying to say USE IT but I have to keep dreaming).

The "key word" is support. Since ACES are the only ones who could conceiveably write an exporter for any CAD application, the real question becomes "Would the owners of the CAD package even be willing to grant permission and/or a license along with an SDK to ACES so they could write an exporter, should they actually choose to?"

Hi Hans,

I think Bill said most already. As long as MS does not offer the exporter tools it would not be of much use to us. Why spend a lot of time to write your own exporter if you get one for GMax or 3DS that works?

Also, if I look at the AliasStudio PLE FAQ it seems to say that no plugins are supported by the tool. So maybe you can't even write a proper exporter for this version.
