• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Background Tiles

Hello there,

I need a little assistance. I've stuck my toe in the water of scenery design before and managed to make a few individual models which I've 'plonked' down in Flight Sim.
Now I want to go one stage further and make some scenery (for FS 2004) with a backgound (photo-real?) tile so that my latest model (a sports arena) looks more at home in its surroundings, i.e. I want to place an aerial photo of the surrounding area in the scenery which includes some parkland nearby and populate it with a few trees and place my arena on top in the appropriate place.
Can someone give me a pointer or two as to how to do this?

Hi,

if your intention is to do this with GMAX it would be no problem (as long as the sourrouding is flat). If it was not and the photo as big enough I would recommend you to make you familiar with Terrabuilder PRO. With this software you are able to combine both mesh and texture. Of course you will need a little time to learn how to do this, but at the end of the day it might be a worthful investment.

Concerning the method using GMAX alone there is a lot of information in the GMAX forum.

Good luck

Thanks Gianni,

I made my original model using GMax.
I believe that the GMax FS2004 SDK won't export ground polygons and that you need to use the FS2002 SDK, is that right? If so, then I need to find out if I can have both SDKs installed at the same time without having FS2002 installed.
Crikey, why isn't there one tool to do the whole lot

Hi,

If the area covered is rather big I would indeed advice the mesh techniques. Other good tools for that are Ground2k4 or SBuilder, but it would also limit the resolution of your photo to circa 4.8 meter per pixel.

Well, it can do them, but it will give you a lot of trouble. So it is strongly adviced to use the Fs2002 gamepack. And yes you can have them both installed with Fs2002 (I am running that setup as well now). With the Fs2004 SDK comes a little document that explains how you can use them both together.
