• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Black Textures

Hello! I had a new hard drive fitted last week and the shop managed to save the majority of my data. However,I am having a texture problem on new objects made in FSDS V3.5.1 The textures appear normal until loaded on to FSX where they show up as black. I made a test cube shaped object with different textures on the 6 sides. Any old texture are displayed correctly but the new textures are still black. The default FSDS colour is grey. The textures are made or converted in Photoshop and are saved as bitmaps. I have tried saving them as 16, 24 and 32 bit and the image as 512 x 512 and 1024 x 1024 but the results are always the same. I do convert the textures to 16 or 32 bit in FSDS. Please help me resolve this very annoyng problem. I expect it will be a settings problem. Thank you very much.

Objects that appear black are normally caused by missing textures. Check to make sure that the textures you make are installed in the correct texture folder for your scenery.

Thanks for replying. My new textures are in the same folder as the ones that do work so this does not seem to be the answer.

Belaboring the obvious ...

Do the copied textures have the same NAME as assigned in FSDS?

If you checked "uses dds textures" did you convert the textures to DDS?

Do the texture names have spaces in the names?

FS does not read 24 bit BMP file, it is best to convert your textures to DXT format for use in FS.

Thanks for your help guys. My problem seems to be resolved. I save my textures to a sub folder called mytextures in the FSX textures folder. I copied the relevant textures directly into the textures folder and they worked. However I am sure I did not have to do that before. Maybe FSDS did it automatically, but not any more. I don't know for sure but I am now happy anyway. Being quite new to this scenery designing hobby, I am not sure what Arno means by using DXT textures. Is this conversion done by FSDS and if so is there some instructions somewhere because I can't find them. Once again, thank you.

You convert your texture to DXT with “Image Tool” which you can find in your SDK, in the terrain folder, I think.

Or you can get “DXTBmp” from Martin Wright’s web site

http://www.mnwright.btinternet.co.uk/index.htm

DXTBmp is very good to have, as it is very good for making transparent textures.
