• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

BMP texture problem

Hi Arno,

first a big thank you for this very nice tool.

And here my first suggestion::eek:

Since Sketchup does also import .bmp files,
it would be nice to see bmp's in the preview
of the mass texture editor and the material editor.
These do only show jpeg's in a preview.
The bmp's are plain white.

Yes, I can look into the dae folder to see
which is Material 1, Material 2....etc.,
but better it would be to see also a preview
of the bmp's. ( for renaming reasons )

Thanks in Advance
Wolfgang

Sounds to me either a bug or texture location problem... should be able to do so... Make sure the Texture directory is looking in the right place; check within the texture settings under options. dae files will always look for jpg files first since that how SketchUp exports them. then with in the Mass texture editor you change it accordingly...

Sketchup can read bmp as a material but will always export them to a jpg files (unless your using the Pro version, which you can export to other formats.

Interesting....
My version of Sketchup does export it's own textures as jpeg
and my external bmp's as bmp..........:)
I have not the pro version and I do export dae.
By exporting as 3d model, Sketchup does create an dae file and an
folder with textures.
Within this texture folder, I can find jpeg's and also my former imported bmp's,
renamed to Material 1, 2....etc.

Maybe I'm using a newer version of Sketchup.
My version is 7.1.6860 in german language.

In my older version I had to convert my external textures into jpeg
prior to importing, because this version didn't show bmp's.
Now I can import bmp's without converting.

Cheers
Wolfgang

What you setting in options when exporting?

Same version here..

Importing from where? where are these external textures coming from?

Do me a favor,... backup everything in the texture folder, the folder that SketchUp is placing the textures in when your exporting from SketchUp. Then remove everything in that folder. Then load up Sketchup and export to a dae file... Tell me what you see. filenames please

Hi,

direct after exporting from Sketchup into dae, I got
the following textures in the folder:

texture0.bmp > 8 bit, has an preview in MCX
texture1.jpg
texture2.jpg
texture3.jpg
texture4.jpg
texture5.jpg
texture6.jpg
texture7.bmp > 16 bit, no preview in MCX
texture8.jpg
texture9.bmp > 16 bit, no preview in MCX
texture10.jpg
texture11.jpg
texture12.bmp > 16 bit, no preview in MCX
texture13.bmp > 8 bit, has an preview in MCX
texture14.jpg
texture15.jpg
texture16.jpg
texture17.jpg
texture18.jpg

I know, as an workaround, I can convert the 16 bit textures into
8 bit textures before importing into Sketchup.
But it would save a lot of time if MCX would be able to
preview also the 16 bit bmp textures.

The 8 bit textures are MSFS stock textures.
The 16 bit I got from a friend, who makes me some doors and windows.

If you wish, I can send you the textures I have used,
then you can try for yourself and believe what I wrote:)
Also I can send you the project, but it's not finished yet.

Best Regards
Wolfgang

Wolfgang,...

ok... Maybe I'm wrong but 16 bit bmp textures are not viewable/usable by FSX/FS9. so why have MCX be able preview them? If I'm correct on that,... then they would need to convert them anyways. MCX does have a texture converter also,... under Special Tools. But maybe your right about MCX converting them to 8-bit, so they are viewable automatically,... but you already have to convert them at some point, so why not convert them before. Another reason to convert them prior to export them is to make sure everything lines up. I have converted after the fact and the textures would be misaligned to the model.

I help this helps!

Hi,

Sounds like a bug to me. MCX is supposed to show all kinds of textures, even if FS does not support them.

Could you maybe send me your textures and model? That would make it a lot easier for me to debug this issue.

Hi,

I have fixed the bug in the BMP reader, so it should work in the next development release.
