• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Developing for FSX and P3D , which SDK?

Hi. A question was asked earlier at OzX, and I was unable to answer, so I thought I would check here and see if anyone knew.

If you are developing a new airport scenery and you want it to work in FSX and Prepar3D (V2.4), then would you use the FSX SDK or the P3D SDK or both?

There are a couple of notes regarding this on the P3D website, but I found one to be as clear as mud and the other to be incorrect. They stated that all FSX SP2 add ons would work in P3D, which can not be the case if every developer out there now is making new installers and adjustments for their products. I know from personal experience that most FSX SP2 add ons will work in P3D, but I have also experienced and read about many exceptions to this. The two P3D sources I'm referring to are :

http://www.prepar3d.com/support/sdk/ and

http://www.prepar3d.com/add-ons/

So is there a simple answer to the "Which SDK" question?

Cheers,

Scott

I would use the FSX SDK in that case. Only if you want P3D v2 specific features in your scenery I would use the P3D SDK for those. And in that case you would need another version of the object for FSX of course.

It also depends which tools you're building models with. This might help:–

In short, the real determinent is which "compiler" you use to create the actual .mdl files.

Prepar3Dv1.4 compiler for both FSX and P3Dv1 products
Prepar3Dv2.4 compiler for P3Dv2 products
