• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

    Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

    By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX:SE DirectX 10 and effects problem

Hello,

I was wondering what is the status of the DX10 "preview" and the issue of FX not working in DX10 preview mode in FSX/FSX:A/FSX:SE? I find myself using DX10 mode all the time because it improves frame rates.

However, some of the effects, namely the sprites that always face the camera, are not working (which includes most of the lighting effects - strobes, beacons, etc...). I can fix that by adjusting particle's properties in fx file from Face=1, 1, 1 to Face=1, 0, 1, but that certainly isn't the solution for all of the fx's in the FSX.

Also, I found some shader improvements from way back in 2012 downloadable from AVSIM, but I haven't tested that out yet.

Any thoughts?
 
Steve Parsons developed a set of fixes available as freeware, the latest is from 2014: https://library.avsim.net/esearch.php?CatID=fsxmisc&DLID=185080

He has a commercial product which I use (and would recommend) that fixes a bunch of additional issues and has backward compatibility with addons made with older SDK's:

Near as I can tell camera-facing sprites work properly, but I haven't tried them in DX10 without Steve's product to verify it's his product that fixed them, and I don't know if the freeware version also fixes them.

With DX10 it's practical to turn on self-shadowing and other features (eg bloom) that are too hard on frames in DX9 mode.
