• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

    Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

    By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Hello to everyone,

I'm new to developing and just start make my first "model". Read manuals, forums and WiKi but there some things I dont understand and need a little more explanation or directions.

At first, I made my "home model' - just for training:




WOW! (yea... wow...)

So, tell me what is wrong w it?



I read about decrase poligons but have no idea how to do that.



After making model I wanted put texture on it. Follow manual on WiKi but... I got lost



I understand, I dont need all of 4 triangles from tower roof. Its enough to paint 1. It will be multiple and in effect all roof will be painted. Am I think correctly?

Also, I selected tower walls:



Looks strange... Author of manual put all maps in one piece. I have no clue how to do that. I made somewhere mistake but dont know where. I can't figure out also how put it to GIMP to paint it (I dont want use generic texture)


I appretiate any suggestions, links, advice, criticism etc.

A few suggestions to place forward, firstly there is a good tutorial included with the FSX SDK, however the method I use to texture, is to the following...

1. Press Print Screen for all your views (except the perspective ofcourse)
2. open Photoshop or any good paint package including the gimp

a. create a new image of the size you'd need
b. create a new layer called "Wireframe model"
c. paste your screen-grab into the "wireframe" layer. - Edit out the background that all you see is the wireframe.
d. now you click on the background image,
e. now paint your textures using the wireframe as your guide
f. Add extra layers for windows, highlights, dirt layers etc as you go along.

then under gmax - create the material as you'd normally..
now select the model, - convert to mesh, select one part of your model,
apply the material you just created, select box.
now apply the unwrap modifier, click edit, drag the shape of the part in the window on to where the part's texture is situated and close the window, you should now have a textured part.

I may add this up as a tutorial up on the Wiki...

Thanks for reply. I forgot mention I don't have FSX. I use FS9 and last night made another model follow manual step by step attached in gamepack. So today I make what u say and see what happen.

try this

have you downloaded arnos excellent video tutorial...this will help you immensely.....you may need the vlc video player as well...freeware..

and you may want to turn of triangle faces in your preferences...jim. look in configure graphics driver..turn off triangle strips...

I gave up to make my own texture - for a while - and decide to finish model from tutorial attached in gamepack. Unfortunately Im stuck with default texture.

I follow step by step and my effect looks different than this from tutorial...
textures don't show up on model :(

click on wiki at top of page..lots of usefull knowledge in there...downloads.

Ok, its done...



I made model and finally figure out how to put texture on it. But not only. Also I exported it to MDL, compiled to BGL and positioned in FS...




I didnt make LOD. I will worry about it later.

Uff... Mission accomplished
