• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX External generated traffic

Hi all,
I have the following problem:
I receive external generated aircraft from a network as DIS PDUs. The traffic shall be visible in the FSX/ESP simulator. Following the SDK documentation there are two comparable mechanisms used in the FSX/ESP simulator. The one would be the use of AI traffic, the other would be the multiplayer mode. As I understood, if I use AI traffic I have to freeze a couple of functions and have to deliver position and attitude to the simulator. The use of the multiplayer mode is not documented. My question would be: Am I right with my assumptions or is there a smart solution which would solve my problem. Or does anybody have a hint where to find a documentation which describes the multiplayer mode from the developer's point of view?
Thanks in advance
Mike

Hi Mike,

I recently wrote a program that interfaces true traffic read from a ADS-B radio receiver with FSX. I guess it's a problem similar to your.

I used AI aircrafts with waypoints list. I extrapolate the future position of the aircraft from its actual position, speed and vertical speed to set a waypoint. I redo this computation every two or three seconds.

An other technique would be to introduce a little delay (let say 30 sec) in the posititon of the AC in FSX, then you can set a waypoint at the present position without the need to extrapolate the future position.

Kind regards,

Patrick.

Hi Patrick,
thank you for the response. I meanwhile evaluated a lot of posts and came to the conclusion that AI traffic would be the best. I even found out how to setup the AI traffic for my purpose and how to freeze the attitude and position updates. A lot of developers reported their trouble with track smoothing. For the moment it seems to be sufficient for me. I deliver position and attitude updates as they appear on the network. That is about every 30 ms. My clients do not formation flying. They observe the external traffic always well separated by ATC. So a 'happy dog track' is not a big problem. Your solution sounds interesting. Whereby I would need a faster response to heading changes because 4 seconds in a visual traffic pattern can dramatically change the separation situation.
Thank you
Mike
