• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

P3D v3 Failed to load texture LM

Hi

I've recently install Sketchup and created a model for an airport I'm modifying. Everything worked fine using MCX Latest version. MDL and BGL file created okay and placed in airport using ADE. However when I attempted to add night textures I get the message:

Failed to load texture: Material_5_LM.DDS

Viewing Texture Folder in Material Editor I see I have a listing for
MATERIAL_5.DDS 512x512 DDS

there is also a listing for 'material_5_LM.dds' but all the sections are blank.

Bob it sounds like you created a night texture, added the _LM suffix and placed it in the proper texture folder. Although you view the texture, you don't really confirm assigning it, that would be a reason why it does not appear. Once you assign the texture you would have to compile the model to preserve that assignment. Have you done this?

Thanks for the reply Rick. As I've never tried anything like this before and just followed info I gained from a tutorial. I opened the .dae with MCX and then
opened Material Editor-Texures, resized the texture to power of 2 and then saved the texture. In properties I added Night Texture and applied. The model
displays fine in FS but I don't have night textures when in night view.

It seems curious that you had to resize the night texture, normally it is just a darkened version of the day texture and separately resizing it implies a loss of the UV mapping. Not saying it's the case just curious. Might anything of relevance come to mind, or perhaps you could upload the model?

Okay Rick I'll give it some more thought. It looks great in FS Just thought it would be a nice touch with the windows glowing at night.

Here is a model/scene I did a few months ago to go with an ORBX scenery you might want to take a look at. The interior walls that are yellow by day have a projected texture that is supposed to give the impression of reflected light in night conditions.

Comparing it to yours will probably indicate what you need to change.

Bob,
I'm having the exact same problem, MCX displays the message "failed to load texture:x_LM"
Tried assigning a texture with "power of 2" (original size is 1024x834 which was used on the texture in SU). Also tried assigning the _LM texture "as is" with the same error message.
Let me know if you solve it and I'll do the same! :)

Hi all,

In MCX the texture ratio doesn't matter, it can also load and display textures that are not a power of two. Although FS won't use them of course.

The error indicates that MCX can't find the texture. So did you place it in the same folder as the daytime texture? Especially when you have loaded a COLLADA model the textures might be read from the COLLADA texture folder and the not the texture folder of your FS scenery. So sometimes it helps to save the model to MDL or BGL and then import it back from that format.

Hi Arno,

I am loading from a .dae file into MCX. The dae-file is located in a folder with all my other models and subfolders for the textures of all those models.

For example desktop/esnz/dae files/ (dae-file here)/subfolder for the textures corresponding to that model/

When the dae file is opened in mcx the textures load fine but are not a power of two (which I fix with the material editor)

Then using material editor I select properties tab and select the texture I want to have a _LM for, and on the right side I scroll down and select nightmap texture and press the browse function to the far right and locate my _lm texture (in the subfolder described above).
Failed to load.

I have tried moving the dae file to the subfolder also so everything was in the same folder but the same problem come up.

But then I tried to move the _LM texture out of the subfolder and into the same folder as the dae file. (but not the daytime texture) however it now managed to load it up in MCX, first time I imported it to P3D it crashed when approaching the twy-sign but I tried again and it worked nicely! :)

Thanks for the support!

Hi,

I think you will see that for the daytime textures there is a relative path by default when you load the DAE file (subfolder\texture.jpg). Without that relative path the texture will not be found.

So I think it will work if you load your DAE file, then use the material template in the material editor to add night textures (this will preserve the relative path). And as a last step resize to a power of two and convert to DDS/BMP. In that case your night textures will show I think.

Arno, I installed the later MCX version and cannot find the textures template. I map my LM texture "manually" and get what you see below. Where did the templates go?

Please disregard. I had downloaded a "short" version, which was missing a lot of features (V130??)

Indeed, you were not using the development release.

Are your night textures showing alright now?
