• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FS9-FSX Model Conversion

I've been plagued with this problem for about a week now and I think this may be the place to figure it out.

I have a static aircraft model that was originally a flyable aircraft for FS9. This was not made static through SAMM it is part of a package of static aircraft based on the flyable aircraft released by the original author. I have permission to repaint his models and was given the original FS9 format .mdl files.

I imported one model into MCX and reassigned all texture names to the new textures that are just repaints of the textures that came with the static aircraft. I then exported it as an FSX .mdl since I'm assuming MCX can do this. I should also mention that I did indeed rename the model and give it a new GUID and saved it under a new name.

When the object is compiled into a library all goes well until it is placed. At that point FSX crashes during object placement preview (in Whisplacer) and never loads the object. I've taken several approaches to the problem since then including exporting it as an FS9 object and compiling it in it's own library and exporting it as a .3DS mesh and then exporting it from GMAX as a native FSX model.

So now I'm out of ideas and since I've never repainted a model before this is all fairly new ground.

Hi Alex,

Can you import the FSX mdl back into MCX without problems?

I never had a mdl completely crash FS.

Yep it would go back and forth both ways and had no problems in MCX but I found the source of the problem and it's Whisplacer. I don't think it can properly handle FS9-FSX models that have new textures applied or some such thing most likely with how the new GUID is assigned.

Anyways Instant Scenery could place the model fine so I ended up buying that. So not an MCX issue it did it's job fantastically just a Whisplacer bug.

Regards

Alex
