• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSDS textures

I am perplexed by what is happening now to my textures in FSDS: The following images can better explain what is happening.

Here is what I have done.

1. Built a model in FSDS 3.5.1: set its texture path in "properties" and "preferences" to my new airport's texture folder in FSX
2. Created texture file 256 x 256 pixels and made my own image.
3. Used DXTbmp to convert texture file to DXT3 format and placed it in my airports Texture folder in FSX.
4. Applied front, back, left right and top textures (DXT3'S) to the object from my airports texture folder in FSX. (Shows up great in FSDS.)
5. Created a scenery object file (.mdl) with FSDS
6. Imported, placed and oriented the model into ADE9x
7. Compiled the .mdl into scenery .bgl file and placed it in my airport's Scenery folder.

Other Information

FSX has had the latest patch applied
the FSX SDK has been updated to SP1 then SP2

ADE9X Environment checker reports no errors with my ADE Setup

I have checked and rechecked everything and as far as I can determine, everything is exactly where it should be, yet the textures will not show up anywhere except for the front side of the model.

I sure hope someone can bail me out of this one.

Couple things to check: Make sure none of the polygons are individually textured, also make sure that your object is actually just a single object and that you don't accidentally have two models in that spot.

Hi Mike and thanks for your input.

I have checked the polys in the model and none had textures applied. Also I am certain that two models are not occupying the same space.
I even created a simple model - a box 20' X 20' X 200' high. I then painted the box with a new dxt3 texture and made the model. I then placed the model in ADE and compiled. The box was where it was placed but void of any textures at all.

My next step was to completely remove FSDS V3.5.1 and reinstall. Dis everything all over again and still no texture showing. Just for the sake of argument, I used the _temp.mdl that FSDS produces when you create a FS Object file. Same thing . . . . no texture.
I am about ready now to uninstall FSX and re-install that...I am my wits end and am game to try anything.

By the way - I am working on a stock airport that I imported (CYSJ) and removed all the default buildings. I then built new models, painted them , placed them compiled and they are all perfect. If memory serves me correctly, I installed FSX SP1 and SP2 after that and then FSX SDK Sp2 just before my trouble began.....I am a bit suspicious.

Can you or anyone think of something else that I may be overlooking?

Hi hecrowell

A couple years ago I had a fellow e-mail me with something similar to this, we tried many things to fix it but in the end I think all we did was make a completely new texture, give that a try. Do not copy and paste make it from scratch.

If that doesn’t work, send me the FSC file and texture so I can have a closer look.

Hi Farfy and thanks.

I have already tried what you suggested - I even created (like I said above) a simple model with brand new texture and still it was the same.

I will send my texture file and the .fsc file to you

Well, I have a confession to make. After all is said and done, my texturing problem was caused by my poor methods - let me explain:

1. In the following image from FSDS Part texturing tool, I have been using the top select button to select the texture for the front. Then, after the file is selected and I arrive back at this window, I have been copying that texture's filename from the first (front) window and pasting into the Back, Left, Right and Top windows. Because FSDS is a windows software, this action seemed to make sense to me. I then in turn selected "properties" and set the proper texture area for the fsce that I was texturing. Aparently, THIS IS A NO_NO ! ! Do not use this method because cut/paste ain't always cut/paste - especially in FSDS.

2. Instead it is very advisable (and proper) to click the first select button, navigate to your texture and select it. Then use the properties button to adjust the desired size of the texture. Follow the "Select - Properties" sequence for each side of your object that you want textured.

The result of doing this improperly (as in example 1) will or could very well be that only one face will get textured - the one you originally used the select button for.

With the very patient help from farfy, we figured out the error of my ways and many thanks to him for his help and advice.
