• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX deteriorating performance.

I've been experiencing this problem for a while now, and I want to know what causes it, and how to stop it.

It doesn't matter what my settings are, whether minimal detail, or full scenery complexity, it still does it.

Example scenario from earlier today: I started in a King Air at Mountain Empire Airport (KMKJ) on a trip to Anson County (KAFP). I start off on the ramp getting anywhere from 20 to 40 fps, I taxi to runway 26 and take off, headed for Wadesboro.

Once I get to the edge of the Blue Ridge plateau, maybe somewhere between KHLX and KMWK, my performance takes a nose dive, going as low as less than 1 FPS. Sometimes the performance will jump back up to normal, and sometimes it doesn't (which is more often than not).

This is agitating. What's up?

poor performance

HI,
may be "teaching Grandma to suck eggs" here, but have you looked at what else is running when your performance drops. Perhaps a virus scanner as I know this affects my fps, although not to the extent of yours.
Try defragging the disk. It may be that the terrain files are fragmented and as such take longer to load.
What AI are you running? in areas of high AI density the performance will drop, especially if the AI is being rendered and consists of non-ai add-on aircraft which are not usually framerate friendly.

Just a few ideas, hope they are of some use.

I defrag once a week, and my AI sliders are at about 50% for both airline and General Aviation traffic.

I make 100% sure that nothing else is running in the background... I just don't know what else could be causing the problem.

Could it be that FSX has a memory leak?

I don't think that it does, or it would be widely reported. One way to check is to monitor your mem usage when the sim is running using Task Manager.

I would also recommend a program called Process Viewer or ProcView (formerly called "FileMon"). This program will show exactly what files are being accessed when you get the slowdowns.

Also keep in mind, the AI load radius is 108nm. That means if you're 108nm from an airport with 50 AI aircraft, then those AI aircraft are hogging cpu resources even though you may be 100 miles away from them.

Lol.... I don't think there are a total of 50 aircraft between MKJ and AFP at any given time, even in real life, unless I diverted to CLT or something. Hopefully i'll be able to figure something out. It's also not any kind of virus or spyware, because one of my programs would have nuked it by now.

Any addons installed or is this with default scenery only? If so, did you try without the addons.

jonmkj,

Could be heat damage if heavy use. Also performance can drop if in multiplayer with several others around. Developers may be the wrong people to ask if they fly little. That may include tech support for this application.

video card

Just had an incident here, but not only with FSX.
my NVidia card is a 8800GTX, and I have just upgraded the drivers. After some time when running graphics intensive applications I get a beeping from the card where previously the PC just rebooted. Much earlier drivers were all OK.
I looked at the card's set-up using Rivatuner and found that at high performance levels tha fan was still set to 60%. I increased this to 100% and since then no problems.
Could it be that your video card is overheating and thus switching to a less demanding mode?

Have you monitored (using ProcMon/FileMon) system usage when the slowdowns occur? That is the only way to really know what's going on.

Okay, I don't know what I did now, but...

1. I decreased texture resolution to 60cm
2. Moved autogen slider to "dense" instead of "extremely dense"
3. I'm letting the video card settings do the anti-aliasing instead of FSX itself
4. Defragged my computer (again, even though it probably didnt need it)
5. scanned for viruses, computer was clean
6. Cleaned out the registry
7. Made sure NOTHING else was running
8. Made sure my laptop was on a hard surface, to avoid overheating.

:teacher:
I think this magic combination here is what enabled me to fly from KAFP to KEXX with 20-30 FPS the entire way without any kind of slowdown like the ones i've been getting.

Stay tuned for sceneries of KAFP and KEXX, as well as KVUJ in between them, and KHBI and 43A a little to the right of them :D
