• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX FSX water

I'm working on a photorealistic scenery for FSX, and I am quite amazed how easy and complete SDK is (so far) compared to the FS2002/2004. Everything looks great and works as advertised. A few small issues:

1: Is it possible to somehow change the intensity of water wave size/"wrinkleness"? I have an open ocean, and a lagoon and inlets just across the sandbar that separates them from the ocean. I'd like the lagoons and inlets to be "calmer", with wave heighmap not as pronounced. Is it possible to have more than one type of water surface defined?

2: I am using Tiffs with channels for water and blending. Blending works great, but water mask seems to give me sharp transition from water to land. This results is coastlines that get quite jaggy, with visible square pixels. Does resampler treat the water alpha channel as 1-bit (black or white) or can there be levels of gray, which would hopefully soften the appearance of coastlines?

Idono about changing the water wrinkleness. Other than turning down the effect in the settings (I like 1 low personally but we can not control the users settings.

I did try to feather the water mask with no good results.

You could try layering a water vector underneath and then using the blend (stock vectors usually do not line up for me but if they do than you could just blend to stock). If you leave the blend at 128 ( or 127 or 129 I do not remember just about half way) it seems to show the imagery with the water effect. One issue you might run into with this is that FSX water vectors are all flat i.e. there is no non-flat water vector like I guess existed in fs9. Water vectors always seem to flatten a little bit more than I want like about 1 or 2 meters as well... which has caused me some pain in many of our fjords.

I just did the water on a lake and measured the flattening that I was talking about above and it is more like 6 meters. Probably so the shoreline vector has a place to sit? I do photo scenery so am not to worried about the shoreline vector as the waves often look strange to me coming from all directions on small an island.

The other issue that I see is that the water vector cuts the dem badly so that I get kind of a trench around my lake. I have in the passed cut the dem myself to avoid this artifact.
