• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

GMax or Solid Edge

I am starting to learn Solid Edge at school. My question is, could a 3D object made in Solid Edge, be easily made to work in FS9?

School is bad enough for this old guy, so I would like to use the tools that I have to learn anyway.

Any help or advice on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Jim,

It all depends on the formats that Solid Edge can export. I did a quick Google search, but could not find much on this subject.

If it can for example export a X file, you would be able to run it through MakeMDL to create your FS objects. Another option would be to export as 3DS and then load that on in GMax, so that you can export from there to FS again.

Hey Arno,

Thanks for the reply. I am just starting to learn 3D modeling, and do not know how to use the codes that you asked about.... but I guess I will before long. :)

Looking in the help section of Solid Edge I found this.

XGL Export Options Dialog Box

XGL is an XML based format that holds facetted 3D model data that can be easily parsed for viewing using rendering api such as OpenGL.

Note: If you save an assembly file in XGL format, the assembly structure is maintained in the exported XGL file.

Dialog Box Options

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chordal Tolerance

Specifies a double precision value that you want to use for tessellating a part. The default Chordal Tolerance value is stored in the SeXGLTrn.INI file, which is located in the Solid Edge Program folder.

Expression

Specifies how you want to express the Chordal Tolerance value. The default value that defines how the Chordal Tolerance value is expressed is stored in the SeXGLTrn.INI file, which is located in the Solid Edge Program folder.

Absolute Value

Specifies that the Chordal Tolerance value is the absolute value of the tolerance.

"A Fraction of" Range Box

Specifies that the Chordal Tolerance value is a relative value expressed as a fraction of the range box of the part being tessellated.

Next week I will be able ask the Professors here at school about the codes. I'm betting that they don't spend much time making FS9 friendly code....or do they?? :scratchch
