• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Ground Object

Pullling my hair out on this. I need to create a simple square base for a fuel station. Having seen the actual object I thought great, its actually raised slightly so all I have to do is create a very thin box in 3ds Max. All works great, shadows, bump mapping, even want to try rain effects but not figured that out yet.

Then I fly around the airfield to see what it looks like...lots of flashing/flickering white, looks b....y awful

Anyone know what the cure is, if there is one

Thanks

Paul

Hi,

You mean the ground poly part is flashing? How high is it above the ground? It is normal that at a distance it can flicker when the distance is too small. That is because of the Z sorting resolution.

If it only happens when you are further away from the object you could try to make a lower level LOD that does not have the ground polygon included.

Hi Arno

No unfortunately I don't have to be that far away, in fact take off and fly at 500ft over the airfield and the fuel base poly(the ground poly) flashes white something awful, I wouldn't mind but its only about 15mtrs square

Cheers

Paul

Hi,

What do you mean with flashing white? Is it not the terrain below that is flashing through it? That is what I would expect.

Hi Arno

The ground object is actually sitting on top of photographic texture, the 'white' is actually the colour of the actual fuel base as depicted on the photoreal scenery (does that make sense)

cheers

Paul

Yes, it does. So you are seeing the photo texture through it. I was wondering if there might be some "ghost" untextured polygon somewhere as well, but that does not seem to be the case.

How close is your polygon to the ground? Maybe raising it a bit will help?

Hi Arno

I'm baffled, raising it and making it slightly thicker has not done the trick. I can't see for the life of me why this will not work, I can understand the problrms with planes but this is a box??? in saying that I have noticed a few textures, not just on mine have a similar problem, flashing or twinkling

cheers

Paul

Hi Paul.

You could try to deactivate the photoreal scenery, and then see if the object flashes or twinkles, to make sure there isn't a conflict between the 2 sceneries.

Is your photoreal a resample created scenery, or a FS2002 groundplane, and is the area flattened? Is the box textured, and is the box a completely separate object than the fuel station?

Have you tried placing a building at the same spot and reducing the elevation so that the roof just sticks up above the ground?
Choose something like a default building that is the right size cause you only want the roof to show and some of them have nice textures as well!

I get a feeling that it may be something to do with the textures here is a picture of the base

The actual pump etc is separate altogether. Makes no sense to me

I have another problem as well, no more of an annoyance which I have posted on the SbuilderX forum...happy days

Hi,

Did you solve your problem already?

Hi Arno

In a word no :( I tried raising it, making it thicker but it still flashes  I have a feeling its something to do with the texture, don't know why but I am clutching at straws. I have noticed a couple of other textures that flash which I am looking at. To be honest I have put it on the back burner while I have been trying to build a 3d Person, aren't heads difficult:D and getting my glass to look better on my gliders (still not convinced I have got that right)

Cheers

Hi Paul,

If you want you can send me the object and I will try to reproduce it here.

Hi Arno

Its built in 3ds Max, are you able to work in that, if so I would be more than happy. I still haven't cured some of the textured faces on some of the objects from blinking either, all very odd.

Cheers

Hi Paul,

I am a bit familiar with 3DS Max, but even showing me the MDL file so I can see what is exactly happening would already help I guess.

I had that problem when showing my "long" airfields but it solved by raising it about .5 feet or more above the ground or whatever was underneath..you might have another polygon "touching" it, that could be it.

Hi Paul,

Sorry, it took me a while to test this. I do see the flickering as well, maybe only at a slightly bigger distance than you indicate.

But all the way along I had the impression that you model had some 3D elements in it as well. I see it is only a ground polygon. So than the easy answer is, why did you not make it with the FS2002 gamepack? That is the only way to make proper ground polygons. Using MDL files that is simply impossible.
