• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Help with an ai helicopter conversion

Hello

I'm trying to get a CH47 Chinook to work as an ai. I have Holger's ai heli
documentation and used his HU-1 Huey as a starting point. The Huey shows and
flies well. I took sections of the CH47 .cfg file like the Model/Title/texture,
weight and Balance and lights and pasted them into the Huey cfg.

The CH47 will not show however. I've checked the two CFG's side by side and
can't see anything obvious but this is my first ai heli conversion so I really don't
know what I'm looking for! :)

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Have you chnaged the .air file to one of the suggested ones (Stemme_as_helicopter.air)? The CH-47 'air file will not work as AI and you won't see the aircraft.

Hi Folks

There's a known visibility issue with one of the CH47 models.
It doesn't show up when viewed from nearby.
I think it's LOD related.

Try observing from tower view
or in external view, zoom all the way out.

Also ensure the contact points are set correctly for that model.

Hi Folks

Chris -
Only from what I've see posted elsewhere,
supposedly it's a fairly high poly un-LOD'd model.

There's a distinct lack of truly AI chopper models out there.

Paul,
Yes, you are correct, unfortunately, 23,000+ polygons and no LOD's according to Aircraft Container Manager. The Chinook, even more so than many other helicopters, is a particularly complex shape, so it would definitely benefit from some LOD work if one could get hold of the source code.

Having tried (and failed) to put a low-poly ai S61 on the route between Tresco and Penzance, I wouldn't relish something as complex as a Chinook for a project.

The other problem, of course, is the lack of "true" ai performance for helicopters in FS9. It must be quite demoralising to spend ages getting something to "look right", then have it fly like a Cessna
