• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

I just purchased FSX and I found FsX KML by accident. I though it would be a major blessing for me to be able re-flatten and add exclutions to scenery that I created in FS9 and work just fine, but in FSX need to be reworked. I created the KML in Google Earth, saved the file, added the file in FsX KML, chose the tag I needed, hit enter, went to the "build" screen, hit build, and I get the error message:"source file .\???32nd STREET FLT AND EXC*.shp not found" The build progress screen says:

"Build started
Processing D:\Flightsim setups\Deveopment Tools\FSX KLM\GE KML's\32nd street flt and exc.kml
Invalid tag ""
Running Run_SDK_Tools.bat
Build completed"

Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong??

Are you sure you tagged every item?

Maybe close FSX KML and reload to see if everything is tagged, then try building again.

If it still doesn't work can you upload your KML file here? I will have a look.

RE:Help!

Ok, I'll do that. Let me ask you though, I only wanted to flatten and exclude library items in the area, part of it is water and a small part is shoreline. I only used one tag:

<tag>Airport_Backgrounds_Flatten_ExcludeAutoGen</tag>
<description>Airport_Backgrounds_Flatten_ExcludeAutoGen</description>
<guid>18580A63-FC8F-4A02-A622-8A1E073E627B</guid>
<Feature>AirportBounds</Feature></tag>

Could this be the problem? The build progress widow said "invalid tag".

Hi, sorry but Im not sure what your problem is.

The easiest way for me to see your problem is if you upload your kml file, so i can test it.

Hi,

Are you sure you uploaded the correct file? The kml you provide has no tag. (Open in FSXKml, in the project window you see an open space next to your file name - the tag goes there: click in the open space or press F2 and the list opens. Use "build" and it compiles beautifully). You may use the "remove kml" feature to remove an old file from the program.

However, are you sure this is what you need? I don't think the ships in the bay are autogen, but rather library objects. In which case you need an exclusion rectangle. This is not a terrain feature but covered in the "Compiling BGL" SDK document, and the xml file with the coordinates is compiled using BGLComp.

In the next version I'm adding the ability for FSX KML to produce XML files for BGLCOMP. You will be able to add (and exclude) scenery objects using FSX KML.

This is good news Matthew, even if other utitlities (like Scruffyduck's LOM) does the trick already. You should think that making an (xml-)exclude might be one of simplest tasks for a scenery developer. But for some reasons it often seems to be a stumbling block. And you do often need this kind of excludes in connection with other terrain changes.

Thanks Peter!! One small step got overlooked, and your right it is compiling beutifully!! I didn't get the results I wanted though, but I figured out another way to flatten what I needed. I'm currently reworking Phil Crowthers San Diego Naval Station. In FSDSv3 there is now way to create a "Hard" surface, and in FSDSv2 it doesn't work, at least not for me it hasn't. So I'm left with learning Gmax or creating an AFCAD2 to be able to drive on the base and the piers. {I don't have time right now to learn how to use Gmax}. The AFCAD works perfect except, in FSX the water rises up to where the invisible taxiways are on the piers, look horrible!! So, I have to create flattening AFCAD like I had to do on FS9 for my carriers. That worked, and so now I need to get rid of the civilian ships parked at the piers so I can put my AI navy ships in.

So thanks for pointing me in the right direction on this!! When I'm done I think all of the other old "Sea Dogs" out there will enjoy what I'm doing with the scenery.
