• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Huge file size BGL! Help?

I have compiled photoscenery for a small airport (1, 5000' runway). The original file is 160mb at 1' resolution.

I have two questions...

1. My output is set to LOD "auto" and it compiles at about LOD23 anything less looks very blurry on the ground, but the resample exports 2500 tiles and the BGL output is around 150MB. Any suggesstions on how to keep the detail (it looks beautiful) without the huge file size.

2. When you load up a flight or refresh the scenery it looks beautiful over the whole airport, but when your landing or on approach the scenery seems blurry, and doesn't load fast enough. Is there a way to prevent this from happening? Possibly display the High Res tiles farther out from the airport. eg...Substitute the hi LOD files for the low at a distance?

Thanks,

John

It would be interesting to see your INF file -- the files sizes don't make sense, my output is normally around 15 - 20% the size of the input.
You can compress the output -- see the sample INF files in the SDK.
Use CompressionQuality =
Play around with values between 70% and 90% to get a good compromise between size and quality.

Have you had a good look at your settings? You need to have your Texture resolution to at least 1m, and your Level of detail radius to the highest setting.

Hi John,

With the compression settings you should be able to optimize the file size a bit as toprob already said. But a bigger files is not always bad, as much compression means more CPU power is needed to uncompress again by the scenery engine.

And I don't think a 150 MB file is big, I once did a test airport that gave 6 GB of BGL files :).

150mb on 1" per pixel imagery is quite good really. You're talking about 2.5cm per pixel...

I think that is overkill though, you may want to set your max auto LOD to 7cm settings...

I'm guessing that is about 2 LOD lower than what it's rendering at.

(edit) yeah looking at it you should set your max autolod to 19. You're currently rendering the imagery at 5mm (millimeters) per pixel. FSX can only display up to LOD19 in sim (aka 7cm per pixel)...

I think it says 1' and not 1''. So about 30 cm resolution that would be.

Thanks Arno, sorry read that wrong...

Yeah the LOD setting max should be set to a more appropriate level, LOD23 is way to high for it to be rendered at...
