• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Is Anyone Using Version 2.2

Some time ago, I released version 2.2 as a development stream. It contained a major new feature - the ability to create static models and place them in appropriate parking spots based on data from a traffic file. As well, I reworked the user interface to simplify it.

I don't recall there being a single post referencing 2.2. So, it would seem it either works perfectly or nobody is using it.

I'm not promoting the use of 2.2. Rather, if it's not being widely used, I want to "dead-end" it, rather than force users to upgrade to it.

So, unless the new capability in, 2.2 is widely used, what is now SAMM Development Release 2.2.00(j) will become an unsupported special release. It will remain available from my website (http://stuff4fs.com) but I will not be supporting it to the same level as I have been supporting 2.1.06 - the current general release.

If it turns out to be widely used (which I seriously doubt), it will become the mainstream and I'll dead-end 2.1.06 instead.

Don,

I've been using version 2.1.06 ever since you released it with no problems . So
I see no need for me to upgrade . One thing I had to learn the hard way was to
" READ THE MANUAL ", since it's very well written and easy to understand .
Best wishes

Leon

I downloaded 2.2 today and have been using it for about 4 hours, but 'unsuccessfully'. I'm a newbie to scenery design. I've read the manual and have been able to make an .mdl file on the first try and a .bgl file on the second try.

I'm saying 'unsuccessfully' because the end result of the program should be a display of the static model in FSX. Something I've not been able to do. Very frustrating. The .mdl and .bgl files are useless unless they are usable in FSX but the manual stops after the file are created. How are the resulting files placed in FSX? Don't know. This short changes all the hard work in creating SAMM if the end user does not see the end result.

Based on the fact that there is a bgl file being created by SAMM, I'm *apparently* able to convert the payware Carenado 210 plane for FSX, to a static aircraft. However, I can not insert it into FSX using the Object Placement Tool (OPT). I think OPT works as designed since I'm able to get OPT to insert default or built-in objects such as the Cessna 172. But it does not work with the SAMM bgl file.

What am I missing? Should I try another object placement program? Which one is free? I know about Instant Scenery but I think it is overkill. I downloaded and installed ADE but it looks like there is a steep learning curve and it also looks like overkill for what I want to do: simply install static add-on aircraft.

Please help. Thank you.

P.S. I'm using FSX with SP2, Win 7 64-bit.

Like any other scenery. SAMM will place individual models for you or allow you to create a library of models for placement with an object placement utility (Place Static Models button).

Since I don't intend to support Version 2.2 - at least to the extent I support the mainstream, I'd recommend you abandon 2.2 and install version 2.1.06 which is available as the SAMM general release from http://stuff4fs.com. Using 2.2 to its full capability requires some knowledge of AI.

This short changes all the hard work in creating SAMM if the end user does not see the end result.
As an acknowledged "newbie" you probably haven't yet realized that much of the enjoyment in FlightSim comes from understanding what's happening "behind the scenes" (which does involve a learning curve) and using that to extend the game in directions of most interest to you.

A "bgl" file can serve many purposes. What's the purpose of the .bgl file you created? If it's not a library file, no object placement file is likely to be able to use it.

If all you want to do is scatter a few static aircraft around an airport, SAMM is all you need. Just follow the manual.

... SAMM will place individual models for you.

Thank you much for the quick reply!

This is all I want to do to start. Make just one AI plane show up somewhere in FSX. If that works, I'll try it with a payware plane next.

Done. I re-imaged my C: drive. For some reason my scenery.cfg in the C:\programdata folder corrupted. It probably has nothing to do with SAMM but the coincidence is odd. I'm glad I make backups. All traces of 2.2 are gone (along with Blender and ADE which I thought were needed to place SAMM created objects).

I'm tempted to blow away the Object Placement Tool from the SDK package too, but am reluctant to do so because it appears to work well with default scenery objects.

If all you want to do is scatter a few static aircraft around an airport, SAMM is all you need. Just follow the manual.

This is great news! I will re-read the manual.

SAMM doesn't differentiate between freeware and payware aircraft. Note that highly-detailed payware aircraft will convert into highly-detailed static models which are very FPS inefficient.
