• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

MSFS24 Keep texture settings when editing a model

@arno Hello how are you, I was wondering if there is a way to keep the texture settings when editing or making changes to a model, here is my example, I build or create the model using sketchup then convert it to collada, import it into MCX and start applying all metallic and normal textures plus other settings, the thing comes when after exporting, placing and testing the model inside the sim, sometimes you noticed an issue with the model, some times just little things but the problem is when I have to go back to fixing the issue on sketchup and then do all the import/export process all over again, with little models with only a couple of textures there is no issue at all, the big issue it's when you have a very large and detailed model like a terminal wit alot of tetures and different texture settings, so thats why I was wondering if there is a way to keep the texture settings when editing or making changes to a model

Hi,

Did you consider to capture the changes you make to the material in a material template? Then you can just apply that template again after importing the collada object again. It depends a bit on the type of changes that you make if you need a template per material or can use a generic one.

Thanks for your fast responce, no, I never thought of that approach but isn't the material template used only to capture settings of a given material, like the glass effect for example? or is there a way to capture the whole model material settings template? what I am talking about it's more of the whole model texture settings especialy when it comes to textures already added to the the model like when you add an emissive, a metallic and normal textures to many of the model materials, must of the time the fixes models need are minor like fixing a window or making a fence taller etc, but without changing any materials in sketchup, I'm just asking to see if there was a way to save some time in this process, the only way I know how do this process is to add each emissive metallic or normal texture to each material that needs it all over again after importing the modified model from collada and when you have a model with 50 to a 100 materials, it takes for ever to do it ;)

If you make the same kind of edits to all materials to add their PBR settings and such, you could probably capture it in a template. But without knowing what you edit I can't be sure.

There is currently no way to store all materoal settings and restore them after you loaded the new collada file. Depending on the changes you make in the colada file it might also be that materials have been added or are removed.
