• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Makemdl.parts.xml CONFIG File issue

Fighting a GMAX installation issue for FSXA (and Windows 7). Getting a flag that during exporting GMAX cannot find the makemdl.parts.xml config file. Matter of fact, neither can I; nor can I find any reference to it. All the other files appear to be in order, except for this config issue. When you export, the XML file is only 1kb in size. Looking for help. I have been away from scenery design for a couple years and I am flat stumped on this one.

makemdl.parts.xml is FS9, not FSX. Its equivalent in the FSX SDK is the modeldef.xml file. Seems you have a versions/setup problem? Looks like you are running a FS9-oriented version of gmax.

Interesting. I have had GMAX installed for years.... I think I will completely remove GMAX, sweep the registry, then try installing it again. Everything indicates that I am using ONLY FSX GMAX, but I have seen stranger things since installing Windows 7.

Thanks for the heads up.

Win 7 huh? Sounds familiar...

Sometimes gmax on my rig fails to find the startup script that gets you FSTools. You can do that manually (supposing you haven't reinstalled yet):

click MaxScript button > Run script

This should open your SDK FSX_GmaxGamepack folder. You can now see a "startup" folder there. Move into it and run the startup script. With that, FS Tools come up and all should be well.

Otoh if you are not directed to the SDK folder then reinstallation seems to be indicated. Not a pretty prospect ...

Best of luck ...
