• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

    Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

Not sure I have the time to begin this project but I've been thinking about the dynamics of it recently. My current scenery has over 5,000 photoreal tiles for just the summer textures and the idea of hand-creating over 5,000 night tiles is really daunting. Do you think it's possible to create a program that goes through all your summer textures, looks for roads and/or bright areas and automatically creates light map tiles?

Anyone know of good VB graphic libraries or algorithms that will do something like edge detection for finding roads? Sounds like it could be a daunting task but if it even through some random bright spots and streaks where roads and houses existed, it'd probably be worth it. You probably could also use the .agn files for input to determine where houses and buildings existed.

Any ideas would be great. What would even be better is someone offering to do this.

Good idea. I have been thinking about something similar for AGN files. With some proper shape recognition, it ishould also be possible to automatically find forest on an image for example and place trees there.

But as I have no real experience with that kind of algorithms and currently no time to investigate in the subject, don't expect me to make such a tool soon :).
 
There was a guy on the British VFR forums that proposed automatic vegetation creation. Think that would be more difficult since the only thing to cue it would be color. Heck, here in Arizona you know the trees more by their shadows than their color.

In a way I automate the process, but only by running a series of steps on the original full-sized image in Photoshop Elements. I haven't got around to creating a macro, but I suppose I could. Of course I only use the whole image, rather than all those little tiles.
Of course I do spend a bit of time brushing out obvious anomolies, such as lights in rivers...

This should be relatively easy (ahem, easy for me to say, I mean) as I use the Detect Forests tool in AGenT to great effect, and it requires very little input on my part. This needs some setting up for each image, but it saves me weeks of work. 120,000 trees in two days makes a bit more sense than a month of planting.
Of course I use Art's editor for the serious work:)
