• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Good morning wise experts

I have played around in the past with raising ground levels to create a more realistic landscape in FS2004 as many areas I fly around on the south coast such as the White Cliffs of Dover dont exist! However I end up with 'sloping water' areas which look awful as the land transitions into water!

When living in Missouri I took the oportunity to go and check out the legendary 'Stockton Gorge' to see if it was as depicted in FS2004. This location (Stockton Lake) was literally 30 miles from our home in Springfield. On seeing it I realised that it is just an anomaly missed by programmers at Microsoft (does anyone know of others please?)

I can see from this that vertical cliffs ARE possible so is there something special we need to do in SBuilderX to create these vertical cliffs please and NOT SLOPES? I have recreated a sea plane base in Hamble where taxiing into the sea is perfect from a sea level base. However flying back towards Dover when you cross the coast at sea level you hit NOTHING! It would be nice to see those cliffs rather than just a beach.

As for the hilarious Stockton Lake gorge, I have created a simple flatten if I intend to fly float planes in this area for realism. If not you can always go for the challenge of taking off from the BOTTOM of the 'gorge' and see if you can climb out without stalling - it IS difficult (unless in an EE Lightning!)

I am unaware if FS 2020 is going to increase scenery accuracy as in the addon FS Global scenery which is a lot better?

Hello:

There is still a lot of fun to be had using / flying FS9.

A number of FS terrain mesh data and rendering anomalies are cited here:

The USGS and other entities have now cleaned up most of the anomalies in SRTM elevation data sets originally used in FS, using a mix of GIS data sources.

IMHO, the best solution for FS terrain anomalies is to use replacement terrain mesh ...from either payware or reputable freeware sources.

Custom solutions for terrain anomalies involves use of LWM2 and LWM3 vector flattens moreso than Area=16N type objects in BGLs.

SBuilder for FS9 (aka "SBuilder version 2.05" aka "SB205") can make either or both types of legacy format vector flattens.

The UK Ordinance Survey data now includes free access to nationwide coverage of England with higher resolution LiDAR elevation data.

Making custom terrain mesh for FS9 is more involved and less efficient in terms of BGL file size / numbers, but can be done fairly easily.

I suggest using SDK resample directly with output from a GIS application rather than via (FS9) methods available via SBuilder for FS9. :pushpin:

Hope this helps a bit with your musings on this topic. :)
