• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Hello All:
Does anyone know how to convert the gauges ( the .gau format) to xml format? Are there any tutors on this or a special known utility tool? In other words, I have some gauges that are in the .gau format that I would like to convert to the .xml format.

The .gau format is a renamed .dll file, and as such it is compiled C code. Therefore it is not possible to simply convert from one to the other and I suspect you'd be pretty unpopular if you did so since people use .gau files to better protect their efforts and intellectual property.

Thank You for the response. Nonetheless, I am not striving for popularity. Second, I believe that you are exaggerating the real truth by indicating that EVERYONE uses the .gau extension file to better protect their efforts and intellectual. Third, there are many other fs conversion utilities such as mdl to xml which is again, is just one conversion tool out of many others. With that being said, I am in search of a tool that will make the .gau files more compatible with fsx. There are many fabulous gauges that developers made that I certainly give full credit to their intellectual knowledge. However and of course, many of these gauges will not work in fsx without some type of compatible conversion tool.

Without getting into the political/ethical debate, I'll simply state the plain, ugly truth...

It simply is not possible to "convert" a compiled C gauge project to XML. Period. End of discussion.

The most that could be done would be to use something like GAU2BMP or FS Panel Studio to extract the bitmaps used.

Then you could recycle the original bitmaps, but you'd still have to write the entire XML code from scratch.
