• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Reflective issues

Hi All:) And a big thank's to ARNO for your welcom when i joined last week.
Since i joined this forum i have tried to read as much as i can about the reflective issues in both FSDS and Gmax I have both, But only FDSD v3 Installed. Now the problem i have is every time i compile a reflective BMP with alpha channel in it i just get a Transparent Texture, i have tried most things that i used to do With FSDS V2 and V2.24, I do know the code has changed and all that implies, but i am looking for a simple answer, But reading many of the threads on this subject it sounds like there is no such solution.
Now i am concidering trying GMAX:duck: All i want is a Reflective Window, :banghead: :banghead: And can i get this with GMAX without all the hassle. (avrosim) E mail phoenixrd1934@aol.com

This problem is usually caused by "HasReflectMap" not being checked in the Makemdl options. Gmax uses the same compiler so it doesn't matter whether you use FSDSv3 or Gmax. Cheers---------Paul

Paul,
Thank you for that info But i have my MakeMDL CFG File set with all the correct Flags and set the flag in FSDS as per Graham Oxtebys tutorial:
[Reflective Effects in Fs Design Studio V3] But i still Get Transparent Textures, also i have read many of the comments on Relective Issues in this forum, one in particular i have followed word for word by JBERTELSON Dated 15-01-2006
[Reflective Scenery in FSDS3-Solution]
But when i changed [Texture_Building] to [Texture_Aircraft] and compiled useing the instructions given, i ended up with My FSDS Test Box and all my 737-400 becoming flying Boxes, at all my major airports including the default, They were the only Aircraft effected, And even when i deleted the Compiled Bgl from Addon Scenery to clear the problem each time i reopened FS9 i found that where there was only one to start with each time i started FS i got more and more at the default Airport i then shut down my pc and restarted and went to my favourite Airport Gatwick EGKK and the same thing was happening there. I have now Removed FS and FSDS both Versions And all Components MakeMdl, BGLComp, BGLC_9 And MSXML ParsaV4 From my system Cleaned My Registry of all files and i now intend to reload and try again, I Have no Idea why this should happen But it is a strange sight to see a line of boxes taxing down the taxiway :duck:
Thanks again Hope i can defeat this problem i am running out of time at 72 but i do not intend to :whiteflag to this i am sure someone will come up with an easy solution Maybe  microsoft might just change the way makeMDl behaves but i will not hold my breath seeing as they have never been able to correct the Reverse thrusters lights in the 737-400  ,

Thanks Reg.

Wow, sounds like a major problem. I think you might be right to reload even though it is a royal pain in the ying yang. I have successfully used both transparent and reflective textures (not on the same part!) on FSDSv3 scenery objects (aircraft carriers) just by following the rules in the Makemdl SDK. BTW, I have less time than you; I'm 74. Hope you get this sorted.

Cheers------Paul

Paul,
Thank you for your help, well yes it is a pain to have to save a lot of work that one puts into the hobby but there you go.
I have succesfuly cleaned out all the old files and cleaned the registry now so far it does not seem as if i have left anything and will start Reinstalling this afternoon, (that is if she who is to be obeyed allows) hopefully things will be back as neer normal later today.
Yep like you i have read the MakeMDL Manuel but somehow Things have not gone the way they should, But like i said i will not give up on this beast and will let you know how i make out when all is installed and up and running again, its nice that we can use a forum and meet such helpfull People it is a pity Politicians cannot be like us and be as helpfull to each other What a great world we would all live in.
Thank's again Paul i will make another post later next week as we are off to stay with our Daughter and Grandchildren Friday for a long weekend.

Hi,

The scenery MDL format does not support reflective textures directly, you will have to do some tweaking to get them working. By default scenery textures are of the type TEXTURE_BUILDING and only the TEXTURE_AIRCRAFT type supports reflections.

I stand corrected; on close inspection what I thought was a reflective texture on one of my boats actually was transparent and looked reflective because of what was behind it. Thanks, Arno, this saves me future headaches!

Paul, Arno,
thank you both for your Help with my problem, I Guess i was not at fault with my installation of FSDS3. And now with the confirmation from Arno about reflective textures in V3, i will just have to do without them in my Scenery,

Arno i hope you had a wonderfull holiday and that you are completely refreshed till next year, We spent last weekend and the first few days this week with our family in Essex i got to fly with my Grandson as his no 2 operating radio, flaps, and landing gear, on a long haul flight from Gatwick to New York then on to Salt Lake City, We have Another Daughter and her family live over there. I certainly enjoyed it, as it makes a change from Designing Scenery and some of the headaches that i have had recently.

Now for my last bit of News i have decided that i will not upgrade FSDS again if the time comes, instead i have decided to invest more time with Gmax, i have in the past tried to come to terms with it but like many others gave up, the main reason for that was i thought it was for the more professional amongst us and also the learning curv but after talking with a friend of my son in law last weekend, who makes his own scenery with Gmax, He bought the Gmax Bible and also the Gmax Handbook from Amazon.com UK and has made some wonderfull scenery useing Gmax, I had the chance to look at both books and felt that was the way to go. I am now awaiting delivery Of both Books. I will let you know how i get to grips with Gmax But in the meantime i shall still work with FSDS whilst converting to Gmax.

many thank's to you both for your help i supose my next post will be in the gmax forum.:)
