• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX Ringpiece failure

Haven't tried Ringpiece in a long time but thought I would yesterday. It's crashing when I try to convert kml - sbx. I note Dick alluded to problems with latest GE. I'm on GE 6 and looking at the kml it says it's using the 2.2 ver of the spec. I'm guessing maybe Ringpiece is written to an earlier version? Any idea of which version, or what can I edit to get the kml sorted?

Scott,

late reply, does the problem still persist?
I used ringpiece last year to build over 400 islands without a problem, so it indeed could be the GE version.

If you post a sample kml code, we could compare it to one of mine, and see the difference.

Cheers,
Mark

I the end, I decided that I just couldn't do a good job of tracing in GE and had much better results just working in SBX, so I lost interest in Ringpiece.

Google Earth did change the KML format a bit, and RingPiece doesn't work with the new version. The author has vacated the forum, so I don't think there will be a new version here.

Shame. It was a neat bit of software that made good use of Google Earth's more advanced tracing ability. And the author was a very creative and interesting guy with a fresh view of FSX scenery creation.

You can still convert KML to SHP files. Seems to me there may be a stand-alone program to do this. SBuilderX can import SHP files and BLN files.

Heads Up ! :alert:

There's an apparent workaround for FSX scenery projects to be made with 'new' versions of Google Earth (aka "GE") KML when subsequently processed via FSX-KML or RingPiece etc. to generate SHP or SBX output files.

FYI: FSX-KML or RingPiece etc. expect KML data in the 'original' GE KML format; certain changes have been made in the 'new' GE KML format.

The solution may be pre-processing one's "NEW" GE KML format output data via "PreFsxKml", a utility graciously provided by author 'Angelus1971':

NOTE: When PreFSXKML opens the FSX-KML GUI, click File > Save so one's pre-processed KML file updates to GE's new format.

BTW: The current project "pre-processed" KML and compiled SHP files are in: [FSX-KML install path]\Output\ folder. ;)

Hope this helps ! :)
