• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

road textures

Hi folks,

for a more realistic look in FSX I want to lighten the different road textures from middle grey to light grey. Therefore I have to find the appropriate road textures, but I'm unavailingly searching for some of the maps used for the different road types.

Does anyone know, which texture files in FSX are responsible for the look of the roads, hiways etc. and where those files are located?

(Notice: I'm using Flight1's "Ultimate Terrain X USA" and the maps I already found and changed successfully were all UTX-textures, as they were easy to find by the "UT"-prefix.)

Thanks for your help - I hope you will help :D

Hi Toby,

open terrain.cfg, located in the FSX main folder, in Wordpad or Notepad. Use "Roads" as a search term and you'll find all the entries for the default road (as well as the UT roads, which would be attached at the bottom of the .cfg file). The Textures= line will give you the name of the seasonal (hard winter, winter, spring, summer, fall) and night variants used for each road type. All these textures are located in \Scenery\World\texture.

If you want to find out what specific road type is used in a specific location you need to load the local .cvx file (see Terrain SDK on how to find it) into TMFViewer.exe, right-click on the road vector, and then use the GUID shown to search for that same GUID in terrain.cfg.

Cheers, Holger
