• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

SAMM two issues

I got a message saying:

The static model name/version is (still) too long...

and then indicated that the model could not be saved. I was just selecting some of the default FSX airplanes and their varients.

After I shortened the name in the aircraft.cfg file, it saved the models but I would think that it should handle the standard names from FSX.

EDIT: found the answer to the "name too long" in a another post (search did not find the error message but I read a post where another user asked about it.)

Second issue is that the pilot texture appears underneath the fuselage of the aircraft.

As explained in the manual and the other post, this is the result of a limitation on the length of texture names in the .mdl file (specified by Microsoft) - nothing to do with SAMM. The static model name doesn't have to be the same as the aircraft title, and you certainly don't have to change the title in the aircraft.cfg file.

Aircraft modelers have a great deal of latitude in their designs. SAMM can't cater to every possible whim. Consequently, as noted in the manual and elsewhere, not every aircraft model will convert 100%. Moreso with FSX aircraft.

I finally found the text box for the model name.

These were models from Microsoft FSX - not 3rd party add ons. I will have to try some others and see what happens.

Thanks for doing SAMM for us!

Being as stock model isn't a guarantee that a plane will convert. In fact, it seems to be a curse. If you try and convert the stock FSX C172, you'll find the the pilot's door is on the ground.

They were all designed by humans who have their own favorite techniques. and they weren't designed to be easy to convert to static models. In fact, flyable aircraft generally don't make good static models because there's a great deal of detail that's not seen in static models and, often, there are no LODs, so they are "frame-hogs".

Let me assure you, I've spent a considerable amount of time trying to isolate the cause of these anomolies. And I have found (and fixed) a few. Those that remain likely will remain forever.
