• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Sketchup has no equivalent of the "self-illumination" option that Gmax does for materials. Is there an option in MCX to make a Sketchup color self illuminated?

Hi,

If you set the emmissive colour in the material editor it should work. This only works for FS2004 MDL files btw, in the FSX MDL format the emmissive colour is not stored.

Hi,

does I understand it right ?
My normal workflow, to illuminate 3D text in FS
was, to export the used color from Sketchup.
Then create an bmp from the resulting jpg and
re-import this bmp into Sketchup and match the
imported bmp with my 3D text.
Then create an duplicate from the color and rename
it colorxy_lm.bmp.
Later in MCX I assign this as the night texture.

Do I get the same result in FS9 by setting only
the emmissive color in MCX ?
And if yes, how does this affect the daylight behavior
of this color in FS9 ?

Best Regards
Wolfgang

Making a texture emmissive is like turning on a light inside the object. The color is made lighter and very saturated. It's also always "on", so it does not work the same as night textures, which are only "on" when it's dark. In Gmax you may be able to make night textures that are also emmissive only at night, but as far as I can tell you can't do this using Sketchup and MCX.

Hi Wolfgang,

If you just want the material to emit light (both during day and night) you can edit the emissive colour. This only works if the material has no texture applied.

Your approach of making a night texture will also work, but if you want it to emit one plain colour the first approach might be easier.

For FSX you need to use the night texture approach btw.
