• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSXA Shadows

Hi Arno

I've just tried your ground poly wizard to place an apron made with Gmax in FSX. It works fine, very easy to use. The only problem I'm having is the shadows on my FSX models all seem to flicker, even shadows which arent in the vicinity of the apron are flickering as if they are slightly under ground.

The apron as been made to the exact shape using the line tool so does not extend outside the apron boundary.

If I remove the apron the shadows are fine.

The aircraft pic is on the apron and is a static model, the building pic is well away from the apron but is also flickering as is all the other buildings and objects.

Stevo ;)

Hi,

Let me take a look at this issue. I did not notice it at the airport I tested, but then I am also not sure the shadows were on :).

After matching the polygons to the curve of the earth I had to raise them a little bit to prevent flickering of some polygons. Maybe that is what causes this issue.

Hi,

I can reproduce the issues indeed, now let me try to fix them :).

Hi,

Humm, I took a look at the issue and I have some bad news.

It is the tweak that prevents the autogen exclusion that gives these problems with the shadow. So it seems the choice is either to have shadows or to have autogen close to your polygons.

Maybe I should make the tweak to prevent autogen exclusion an option for the moment.

That would be a good idea, as I'm more interested in the ease of use of this wizard, and can live with the autogen issue.

I did spend all of Friday trying to solve my shadow problem, but the wizard was the last place I looked -- mainly because, as stevo mentioned, the problem extends outside the ground polys.

In the end I did things the old-fashioned way, via the FS2002 gamepack, but I love the way the wizard speeds up the process.

It might be possible to create a platform for the raised polys. That should solidify the shadow.

Hi Dick,

If I remove the dummy RefPoint to keep the autogen the shadow is fine. Also without a platform. So I doubt that will help.

Hi,

I have now made the preventing of autogen suppresion on option in the wizard. That should fix the shadows for now (although it will cost autogen).

For my project I want both, so I will continue experimenting to see if there is a compromise that does both.
