• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Shadows

Hi, All

I want to make a long harbour mooring platform with a landable surface, but one that shows the shadows of not only aircraft/helicopters but also cranes, warehouses, vehicles etc.

Does anyone know how to make objects show shadows of other objects?

(I know how to do it to show the shadow of a plane in close proximity, but I want it to show the shadows of all other objects, even if it doesn't cast any shadows of its own)

Thanks

Fern

its not really my area but some things to try while you wait for gurus ;)

Have you added the harden you your object yet? This will (i think?) add the shadow of the landing helo/plane (!?).

Otherwise, the only way I can see is to make all objects that you want to shadow each other (i.e. cranes, cars etc) included in the model of your pier and turn on manifold self shadowing.

There will be a considerable performance overheard with this id imagine.

The trick to shadows on freestanding platforms is that the buildings must sit at the exact altitude of the surface of the hardened platform. Heli's and planes sitting on the platform should show their shadows properly. There were some platform shadow problems before SP-1, but I haven't noticed any lately.

Which FS version Fern? With FS2004 this is not possible. With FSX you might be able to do something with the volumetric shadowing, although I am not even sure if that would really work in your case.

It worked for the seawall tarmac at KNIP the aircraft shadows were iffy but the building shadows were solid. That was FSX.
