• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Source Aircraft?

From the SAMM Manual:
(SAMM will not convert aircraft models developed specifically for FSX or for FS2000 or earlier.

There are check boxes for FS9, FSX, and Other.

The above statement implies the SAMM will convert FS2002 models.

But it does not. It only seems to convert FS9/FS2004 models.

Are there any plans to make SAMM work with models other than FS9/FS2004?

As noted on Page 2 of the manual, these checkboxes are for selecting which set of aircraft folders to use. You may have FS9 aircraft in your FSX aircraft folders.

Bob, not every aircraft will convert sucessfully with SAMM. Most FS8 aircraft I have encountered will. Perhaps you could send me a couple your aircraft folders, or links to those aircraft, that are giving you difficulty.

Don,

Is FS2002 the same as FS8?

Every FS2002 airplane I have tried has given me the the message "Not a FS8 or FS9 airplane".

Every FS2004 airplane I have tried has worked.

FS8 is the same as FS2002.

In the context of SAMM, a FS8 aircraft is one that has been compiled with the compiler used with FS8. It doesn't mean any old aircraft that still works with FS8. If you are getting that error message, ir means the aircraft is of a vintage earlier than FS8 (or later than FS9).

As I suggested before, send me a couple of aircraft or links and I'll check them out.

Don,

I have never used this attachment thing before. I think I have attached two sample files I tried.

Bob, while those two aircraft may have been advertised as FS2002 aircraft, they use older technology.

SAMM only "understands" aircraft compiled with Microsoft's FS8 BGL compiler - which is also used for FS9 aircraft (but not FSX). If SAMM says it's not a FS8 or FS9 aircraft, you can be sure the .mdl format doesn't conform to that standard.

You can easily confirm this by opening the .mdl file with Notepad (or any other text or hex editor). Files compile with this compiler will start with the ASCII characters "RIFF".

Don,

Thanks. When you download this stuff you don't have a clue what you will get.

I'm going to look at some stuff marked "FS2002/FS2004".

Before you get too "down" on freeware developers, those two aircraft are FS2002/FS8-compatible - despite the fact that they were created with an older compiler.

The technology used to create an add-on is usually of little relevance or concern to the users. How the add-on performs is the primary consideration. There's no need for developers to "reinvent the wheel" to accommodate each new release of FlightSim. Indeed, in my own case, I'm about to release an FSX/Orbx PNW/UTX Canada-compatible airport that includes .apis initially created for, I think, FS2000. (I am intentionally using buildings and other objects from an earlier release of that airport by another author - with his consent and assistance. Those object are still compatible with FSX and, as a user, you don't need to be aware their vintage.)

Perhaps I should have been clearer in the SAMM documentation as to what was meant by FS8/9 aircraft - though, in my own defense, I doubt there was much confusion with my reference to SAMM being unable to convert "FSX aircraft".

Don,

I'm not really down on the other developers. Many are good and some are really bad. Many look nice but don't fly well.

My current interest is "Vintage" airport development. Mostly WWII military airports.

Last week in a download I found a "Vintage Vehicle" library package. They were all pre 1950 vehicles. I wish there were more available, 50's, 60's & 70's.

Bur I have really "Fallen In Love" with SAMM.
