• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Texture resolution question

I am working on my first scenery project that I hope will be similar to flytampa's projects. I am taking on a much smaller airport however. I have been reading all the information I can find about scenery creation but I have a question that I cannot find the answer to.

What would be an appropriate resolution for making the "FlyTampa" style textures for my airport. I want to know the maximum. Currently I have mapped the entire airport out using Adobe Illustrator, and have begun painting taxiways and runways in Photoshop. My file is currently at approx 20cm/pixel. Is that an appropriate resoulution? My photoshop file is something like 5000x10000 pixels.

Thanks in advance. I'm sure I'll be back here with more technical quesions later.

On a side note,

Im creating the entire airport in 3ds Max 6. This way I will have everything in its place and can see what it will look like before placing it in FS. I plan on exporting each object out as a .3ds file and opening that in gmax to convert it. Is this a reasonable approach or am I going to have a big headache when exporting time comes?

Hi,

I think if you have small airport you should be able to use that resolution. I have tried a 16 cm resolution once for a big airport, but that resulted in too much textures (the loading took ages, as the airport required around 1 GB of textures). So I think as long as your total texture size is not too big, it should work fine.

Thanks

Thanks arno and welcome back.

I do have another question if you dont mind. When it comes time to build the actual ground polygons in gmax, should the taxiways be a seperate polygon from the grass?

Yes, it is easiest to use different polygons for parts that should have different textures. This is also useful if you want to place the grass and apron at different layers.
