• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

    Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

    By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Texture tiling in Gmax

Hi,
I'm creating a building and want to repeat the same texture along its side, (basically a vertical strip with a window that's repeated.)

However, I'm having trouble with the texture tiling in Gmax. I have all my building textures laid out on a single bitmap, and seem unable to select a sub-portion of that to be tiled using the UVW Mapping Gizmo. Instead I always end up with the whole width of the bitmap tiled across the face of the building.

Any idea how I should do this?

A small update:

I've created a second material, and used the crop function of the material editor to select only the portion of the bitmap I want to be tiled.

However, when I select just the polygons I want to paint it to, apply a UVW Map and then apply the texture, it applies it to the whole object, overriding the first material that I already painted it with.

Anybody got any ideas or pointers for me?

Hi!

In short: after you have selected an UVW Map for you object, use the Unwrap UVW modifier to select which area of the image that should be applied to the selected part of the object. Most often you select a face and "unwrap" it, then move on to the next face.

Thanks for that. I actually just got it to work in the end, by creating a new material and using the crop feature. I had trouble assigning it to selected polygons without it being applied to the whole object, but I think that was to do with the ordering of my modifier stack.

If I have trouble again I shall try it your way.

As with most things in life, there's nearly always more than one way to accomplish any given goal. Some are easier than others, some only appear to be more complex, but in practice are truly the easiest... ;)

I'm constantly reminded though that one of the most powerful tools available for precise UWV mapping is so often either overlooked or simply unknown... :D
