• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

FSX Textured preview in GMax

Hello,

with BglAnalyzeX I extracted a mdl from a bgl-library. I loaded it in ModelConverterX and exported it as a 3DS object. Now I imported it in GMax.
The model is imported correct, but I cannot see the textures in the perspective view. Have I forgotten something during exporting/importing or must I change some of my preferences in GMax, or is it impossible to have a real textured preview from an imported object?
By the way, after exporting it in GMax as a mdl, I can see it with correct textures in ModelConverterX.
Can someone help me?

Bernhard

The 3ds export / import into GMax will preserve UVW mapping.

The FSX materials however are not imported ... so you will need to reconstitute these from the texture files in the FSX directory, and create new materials in Gmax.

As I have stated a number of times (and at the risk of sounding prudish) ... make sure you are clear about the terms of the Microsoft EULA .... you cannot legally decompile / modify and redistribute FS models without express permission.

If it is all for your own use then that is unlikely to be a problem.

Hi,

After importing into GMax you need to go into the material editor and press the blue/white checkerboard icon. Else the texture is not shown in GMax.

You also want to check the texture names. The 3DS format can only store textures in DOS 8.3 format. So sometimes some information gets lost.
