• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Tyre marks

Hello
Has anybody made tyre marks, black/old spots on taxiways/apron?
Any ideas what techinq to use? Adding a new layer to the ground with different black tones won't give anything realistic.

I'd think a photo is the only hope, pasted on a flat polygon with dxt3 alpha channel making the photo element of the mark to blend into the default.

Hi Bob,

As far as GMAX-styled airports are concerned I agree with sk699. I think it depends on the size of the texture. As long as it is not too big and designed properly it should be possible to achieve satisfying results.

uups. I mixed up the names. My reply should be for sk699 of course

sorry for that.

Okei thanks for the replies
But has anyone of you tried something like that?
Maybe a screenshot of the results?

Not really tiremarks, but I have used the technique mentioned above to make mud-marks on a grass runway. So I placed a polygon on top of the grass with a higher layer number and the texture of the marks is partly transparant.

sk699...I've done other similar things, but not the tire mark exactly. But no reason why it wouldn't work. Why not just try it? I've used this technique to paint "words" on taxiways. The cool thing is you can try it and see the results in an hour or so. Faster than evaluating screen shots!

Just get an overhead shot of tire marks, you can use the high res photos available from the USA urban series images, assuming your tire marks aren't different from the USA tire marks! Make a photo shop image...perhaps 256x256...make a selection with a feather of several pixels around the tiremark, save that selection as a channel, reverse the mask...and save as 32bit. convert to dxt3 in imagetool....and setup a gmax poly paste the material, and export with the fs2002 tweak to remove shadow and establish the layer level.

Good evening Bob
Thanks for the description. I have done the ground layers using the same method. But just thought how to make those tire things. Getting a photo to use in making textures isn't so easy.
But about the USA urban series. Could you tell me what are these and where could i get them? A little search in google.com didn't help
