• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

No idea what they're made with, so this can go into 'Other 3D objects' :p

Anyway..

Does anyone have any idea how Gary Summons makes his ground vehicles? They not only follow the roads and things (which isn't that hard to do in itelf), but they avoid aircraft they encounter, as well as turn up at gates if you park and turn off your engines. I can see they're not ordinary animated objects as they still have shadows when you turn off 'gorund scenery casts shadows'. I thought they may be AI running on a seperate AFCAD, but then they'd have to be included in the aircraft folder, and I can't find them.

How does dynamic scenery differ from normal animated scenery objects and do you know of any tutorials on how to makie it? As this is something I would really love to include in my own sceneries.

I think the easiest way to describe dynamic scenery is that you have a character and a script. The character ( object ) is in a special dynamic object library file and the script ( path bgl ) calls the character, tells it how to act, where to go and what to do, using the special dynamic scenery commands.

As for tutorials, I have not seen any. If you have FS2002, you might try FSDyn! to start with to get a grasp of what dynamic scenery is all about.

Unfortunatly, with the advent of the AI candy, it has been sort of left in the dust and has not really been brought forward since FS2000. But it still functions in FS2002 and FS2004. Designing new objects for dynamic scenery is not for the faint of heart and the only new tool for making the path bgls, FSDyn! for FS2002, while a nicely done program, is just too simple with no real path editing abilities and still relies on stock or FS98 libraries made with DynKit. Perhaps with the comming of FS10 and its extended modeling capabilities via XML we will see a way to have dynamic scenery brought up to date and some ingenious programmer will build a new tool for making BOTH the path bgls and NEW dynamic libraries.

My biggest fear of FS10 is that it is going to require a huge investment in upgrading hardware and the operating system. So unless the core features of FS10 are a giant leap forward, I wonder if it will be worth the investments. I'll wait and see with my fingers crossed, but won't hold my breath.

They're not a problem - I was just highlighting the fact that they have shadows when other scenery doesn't to show that they're a seperate entity to the normal scenery objects.

The point I was making sort of proves that Gary Summons is using AI, AFCAD etc
for his ground vehicles if you turn off "Aircraft cast shadows" and his vehicles
shadows dissapear.
