Unify Normals in Vertex List

I am not sure if this post is located correct here?
But I started to redesign our big tree library and have the following problem:

I changed the Normals in the vertex list and have the result on the left side.
The tree is very dark and has no lightning like the autogen trees.

On the right side I did not use the unify Normals command and have the lighted and not lighted side of the tree.

Is it possible also to tweak the tree to have everything in this lighted variant?
The Autogen trees in the back are perfect?

Is it a problem of material?

Thanks for your help.

Hi,

Your tree indeed turned out a bit dark. Are you sure that this is not something in your texture (eg, is your texture not much darker than the autogen texture). If not you might want to try to use a different normal for the polygon (but that would have to be done manually).

Hi Arno, I also tried it with the FS2004 Texture. They are much darker than the autogen trees.
What values do you suggest? I have 50 different trees I want to update :(
So I think this will be a long manual update and a long testing before if no oe knows the values.
Thanks for help

Hi Christoph,

In MDL Tweaker II I am now using a normal that is pointing upwards for all polygons. Maybe you want to try something else, like always pointing downwards or so.

I would have to check my own trees, but it did not occur to me yet that they are darker than the autogen.

Hi,

so mean I have to change all values to -1.
I do not remember in wich column you do make the changes.
I try to test it this evening and give you an feedback.
Maybe you can help me afterward with a vb routine to tweak this Trees:)
Thanks for help

Hi Arno,

I just tested some of these normals in nx and ny.
I have to do it in the asm file :-(
But the trees are not bright any more...

OK one post back! It seems to work:)
Arno can you please make me a Test Tweak edition?
I need nx = 1.000 and nz=0.000.
It is completly other way around like you use it.
Maybe we have a different in using Gmax and FSDS?
Would be nice if you can try this out for me.
Thanks

Hi Christoph,

Sure, drop me an email and I will sent you a test version. If FSDS is indeed different from GMax, then the normal should become an option in MDL Tweaker II.

Arno
Great!
Ill Test and give you an Feedback. I also send you a mdl with Texture. Then you can see the difference by yourself?
Email is on the way.
Thanks

New version available, in which you can specify the direction of the normal in the options.
